Students attack MTC bus conductor in Chennai

Chennai: A group of government school students travelling on the footboard of an MTC bus, allegedly attacked and thrashed the conductor of the bus before being dragged by commuters and the bus driver on to Velacheri Main Road near Dhandeeshwaram Nagar here, leading to a huge traffic snarl on the stretch for a good half-an-hour during the peak hours today.

The incident happened around 9 am when a group of around 10 Government Model Higher Secondary School students were travelling on the footboard of 45A bus route (bus no. TN 01 N-9520) that plies between Madipakkam and Anna Square. More than 70 commuters were inside the bus when the incident took place, said eyewitnesses.

"Since there was little space for commuters to get in and move out, I whistled so that the driver halts, following which I advised the students to move out of the bus and board another one that was coming right behind. But the students would not listen. Soon, one of the students started hurling abuses at me. Another one held me by my collar, while another one slapped me," alleged the conductor, who suffered minor injuries.

While the driver immediately stopped the bus, commuters who were witness to the incident held one of the students by the collar and dragged him to the main road, thereby blocking traffic. "The students were trying to get on top of the bus when asked by the conducter to move out," said an eyewitness.

One of the students involved in the brawl claimed that the conductor had slapped one of the students, following which the students attacked him. "The conductor asked us to move out and we refused. He then asked the driver to stop the bus and attacked my friend," charged a student.

Apparently, the juvenile who slapped the conductor wasn't wearing a school uniform, prompting eyewitnesses to claim he wasn't a corporation student. However, his friend clarified that the attacker had worn a colour dress since he did not have a uniform.

Meanwhile, buses piled up on Velacheri Main Road after the incident, even as police officials rushed to the spot to control the disorderly crowd. While all the commuters were asked to get down from the 45A bus, those travelling by cars and two-wheelers were also left frustrated.

"Why should the issue be brought to the main road, causing trouble to thousands of people," a commuter asked. A police official attached to the Velacheri police station, said, "The situation was immediately brought under control and the students were let off with a warning." He added that the conductor did not want a complaint to be filed against the juveniles.

Gamesa secures first orders for the G114-2.0 MW in India: it will install 184 MW at two wind farms

* Since its launch, the Global order book for this turbine model has grown to over 2,000 MW.

* The company will install 50 of its G114-2.0 MW class S wind turbines at a wind farm being built in the state of Andhra Pradesh and 42 turbines of this same model at a second project located in the state of Karnataka.

* Gamesa’s order intake in 2015 topped 3,880 MW.

18 February 2016: Gamesa continues to notch up product strategy milestones having secured the first orders to supply the G114-2.0 MW turbine in India, a model for which the worldwide order book already stands at over 2,000 MW. Specifically, these two contracts contemplate the installation of 92 G114-2.0 MW class S wind turbines (184 MW) in India.

With the signature of this contract, the company's global order intake in 2015 topped 3,880 MW.

The first order, placed by a leading independent power producer, encompasses the installation of 50 of its G114-2.0 MW class S at a project located in the state of Andhra Pradesh, which will be commissioned during 2016. The second order, meanwhile, placed by an important Indian renewable energy developer, includes the supply of 42 of its G114-2.0 MW class S turbines to a wind farm located in the state of Karnataka. The project is slated for commissioning in December 2016.

With a tower height of 106 metres, this new G114-2.0 MW class S turbine variant is custom-designed for the low wind speed sites of India.

In both cases, the turbines will be manufactured at the nacelle factory in Mamandur, close to Chennai, which Gamesa expanded one year ago in order to install a new production line and introduce the G114-2.0 MW into the Indian market.

"Technology is a key source of differentiation in terms of maintaining Gamesa's competitive edge in India, a priority market in which it is the leading OEM. India accounted for 28% of the company's sales volume (in MW) in the third quarter of 2015”, explained Mr. Ramesh Kymal, Chairman & Managing Director, Gamesa India.

The G114-2.0 MW is designed to yield more power at lower cost at low and medium wind speed sites, making it particularly suited to India's wind conditions. With a rotor spanning 114 metres, the new turbine’s sweep area is 38% greater than that of the G97-2.0 MW and it produces up to 20% more energy a year. This turbine is part of Gamesa’s 2.0-2.5 MW platform whose credentials include 21 GW of installations in 35 countries.

Gamesa's presence in India - as technology provider and wind farm developer - dates back to 2009. To date, it has installed close to 2,270 MW and services over 2,000 MW under O&M agreements. In addition, in its capacity as wind farm developer, it has developed 1,435 MW. The company has been the number one OEM by market share for the last two years. Its order intake in 2015 topped 1,300 MW in India, up 54% year-on-year.

With Generic Drugs Hepatitis C Treatment is Now Cheaper & Convenient: Doctors at Columbia Asia Hospital, Ghaziabad say Treatment with Drugs is yielding Many Satisfactory Results

* Generic drugs for Hepatitis C introduced a year ago are much convenient alternative to tedious & and expensive injections

* Doctors at Columbia Asia are treating patients with drugs available in the market successfully with no side-effects

Ghaziabad, Feb 2016: Hepatitis C in India has always been referred to an expensive disease whose treatment can be affordable to only a select few. The only option available to patients so far was a year-long painful course of injections which also resulted in side effects like nausea & fever, besides being prohibitively costly.

However, with the introduction of generic drugs in the Indian market like Ledpsavir, Dalactasvir a year ago & Sofusbvir, six month ago, the situation has changed dramatically and for good. With drugs like Sofusbvir, Ledpsavir, Dalactasvir a much cheaper as well as convenient and safe option, Hepatitis C treatment is no more a rich man’s preserve.

At Columbia Asia Hospital, Ghaziabad, doctors have treated several patients with these drugs in past few months and have noticed results that are safer, quicker and affordable to more people. Hence, the hospital wants to raise greater awareness about the better and more convenient treatment option available and reduce the dread associated with this disease.

“We see approximately 15-20 odd patients of Hepatitis C of which several have been successfully treated with these new generic drugs. The treatment practices previously that involved a year-long dose of injections was quite painful for the patient both physically, mentally & financially.

The patients also experienced strong side-effects like fever & nausea along with suffering a significant dent on their pocket with the treatment costing somewhere between Rs 2-2.5 lakhs a year with a success rate of 60-70%. Comparatively, the new generic drugs involve only oral tablets which are way cheaper, with no side-effects and a success rate of 95-98%. The course of these medications is just three months and the cost involved is Rs 60-70,000, a remarkable reduction over the previous method,” says Dr Manish Kak, Consultant Gastroenterology, Columbia Asia Hospital-Ghaziabad.

“We want people to know that such an option is now available and they need not feel  disheartened and worry excessively about the cost involved in treatment of the disease,” adds DrKak.

Hepatitis C is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis C virus: the virus can cause both acute and chronic hepatitis infection, ranging in severity from a mild illness lasting a few weeks to a serious, lifelong illness. The hepatitis C virus is a blood borne virus and the most common modes of infection are through unsafe injection practices; inadequate sterilization of medical equipment; and the transfusion of unscreened blood and blood products.

130–150 million people globally have chronic hepatitis C infection out of which 12.5 million are in India. A significant number of those who are chronically infected will develop liver cirrhosis or liver cancer. Approximately 500 000 people die each year from hepatitis C-related liver diseases. Antiviral medicines can cure approximately 90% of persons with hepatitis C infection, thereby reducing the risk of death from liver cancer and cirrhosis, but access to diagnosis and treatment is low.

ICRA cautions on the deterioration in Credit Profile of PSBs

ICRA cautions on the deterioration in Credit Profile of PSBs; Rating actions to follow

As per ICRA, credit profile of PSBs has worsened because of higher than anticipated stress, slower than expected pace of recovery and weak outlook for several credit intensive sectors.

Higher level of stress is likely to significantly impact earnings and solvency profile of PSBs over next 2-3 years. Additionally adverse capital markets conditions have reduced the prospects of mobilizing capital from non-Government sources, while there has been no material success in mobilizing capital through Additional Tier I (AT1) instruments. All these factors contribute to deterioration in credit profile of the PSBs, which may get reflected in ratings / outlook change announcements for some of the PSBs over next few days once the rating reviews are concluded.

ICRA acknowledges, any material change in the above conditions may offset some pressure on the credit profile of PSBs and will incorporate the impact of such developments as and when these are known.

ICRA ratings for PSBs continue to assume high level of support from Government of India (GoI), later being majority shareholder in PSBs. Continuation of timely support from GOI would continue to remain a key driver for the ratings.

In light of the challenges highlighted above and higher exposure of PSBs to stressed sectors, their asset quality indicators are likely to remain weak over next 1-2 years.  As it would be a challenge to reduce the pace of fresh NPA generation as well as recover from a large stock of Gross NPAs and standard restructured advances, estimated at around 13.3% as on December 31, 2015.

Acknowledgement of stress by PSBs was reflected in Q3, FY16 asset quality indicators, post RBI’s ‘asset quality review’. PSBs’ Gross NPAs % increased from 5.6% as on September 2015 to 7.1% as on December 2015. PSBs Gross NPAs % are expected to worsen further in Q4, FY16 on account of asset quality review exercise.

Higher than expected slippage in asset quality has led to significant dilution in earnings in relation to the risk (annualised operating profits in relation to net NPAs have dropped to 47% in Q3, FY16 from 71% in Q2, FY16).

Additionally, sizeable Net NPAs (4.3% as on December 31, 2015) and other weak assets (standard restructured advances of around 6.2% and some other weak standard assets) are likely to keep credit costs elevated over next 2-3 years, leading to pressure on earnings and therefore internal capital generation as well as PSBs ability to raise capital from non-government sources.

Further, PSBs Net NPAs in relation to Net worth have increased to 47% as on December 2015 from 35% as September 2015, weakening their ability to withstand unexpected losses.

PSB’s aggregated Tier I capital is estimated at around 8.2% as on December 2015. In light of expected low internal capital generation (less than 5-6% over next 12 months), limited visibility on PSBs ability to raise capital from non-government sources as well as investor appetite for AT1 issuances, PSBs’ dependence on GoI for fresh capital raising is expected to be very high. In ICRA’s estimate Tier I capital raising requirement during FY16-FY19 for majority of PSBs is more than 150% of current market capitalisation.

In light of recent pressure on profitability and internal capital generation, In ICRA’s estimate, even to maintain a credit growth of 10-12% per annum during FY16-FY191, PSBs would need to raise core tier I capital of Rs 1.6-2.4 trillion and AT1 capital of 1.0-1.1 trillion during FY16-FY19. If GoI restricts its capital infusion plan to Rs. 0.7 trillion for FY16-FY19, several PSBs could have restricted growth leading to further pressure on their credit profile.

1Assuming PSBs maintain buffer of 0.5-1.0% over and above minimum regulatory requirement

Suspected insurgents shot at and wounded three people, including a school girl, in Manipur on Friday, police sources said. Yumnam Suraj, a school van driver, was at a restaurant at Wangkhei in Imphal east district when three youths stormed the place, asked the driver some questions and then shot at him.

The girl, a tribal girl hailing from Churachandpur district and studying in Imphal, was with him when she was shot at in the arm. On hearing the gunshots, Romila, the owner's wife rushed out to intervene. The suspected rebels shot her three times in the chest from close range. She is battling for life in a hospital.

The sources said the driver had brought the girl to the restaurant. The driver maintained that he and the girl did nothing objectionable, but the sources said that they were "dancing".

The driver could not explain why he had brought the girl to the place. The incident comes after some outlawed underground organisations issued a public warning not to indulge in immoral activities.

Locals had burned down some restaurants, claiming they were being used as love nests. Police said members of a banned outfit are responsible for Friday's shooting, though no group has made a claim so far. The owner was not in the restaurant at the time of the incident.

Other concessions announced included increase in pension for nutritious meal workers, relaxation in norms for promotions and a rise in honorarium for guest lecturers.

In a suo motu statement in the Assembly, Jayalalithaa said the assistance under the Family Welfare Fund for the kin of government employees, if they die in harness, would be increased to Rs three lakh from the present Rs 1.5 lakh accepting the request of several employees associations.

According to the plan, the employees' contribution would be Rs 60 from the previous Rs 30, she said. As of now, the government subsidy for the scheme is Rs 6.18 crore, and the increase in assistance would entail an additional expenditure of Rs six crore and it will be borne by the state government.

Amid stir by sections of government employees pressing for several demands since February 10, she said government employees "are the face, foundation, and backbone of the government" who take government welfare schemes to the people.

She said government employees had given several demands and representations over which senior ministers and officials held talks with them. "My government has decided to give them various concessions," she said.

On the demand of several government employees unions for scrapping the Contributory Pension Scheme and reverting to the Old Pension Scheme, she said, "the demand should be thoroughly scrutinised. Hence, an expert committee will be set up to go into the demand and make recommendations to government. An appropriate decision will be taken based on the report of the panel."

For those who joined government service on or after April 1, 2003, the Contributory Pension Scheme is applicable under which employees and the state both contribute for the Pension Plan.

Under Group Insurance Scheme for employees including those in local-bodies, government aided educational institutions, and nutritious meal programme, the sum insured would be increased to Rs.Three lakh from the present Rs 1.50 lakh. It would mean an additional expenditure of Rs 20 crore for the government over and above the Rs 22 crore per annum being spent now, she said.

Jobs under compassionate grounds would be regularised through a common government order to avoid delay, Jayalalithaa said. Those appointed under compassionate grounds could get employment benefits like increment only after regularisation.

For posts that need relaxation in norms, nod of TNPSC would be obtained and government orders would be issued relaxing norms, she said. Till such time TNPSC approval is received, such employees would be treated as temporary government employees and they would be given annual increment.

The pension for retired nutritious meal employees would be increased to Rs 1,500 from the present Rs 1000 benefiting 86,873 employees and it would cost an additional Rs 51.13 crore for the government.

Similarly, cash benefits would be increased to Rs 60,000 from the present Rs 50,000 for nutritious meal workers. Also, cash benefits for chef and cooking assistants would also be increased to Rs 25,000 from Rs 20,000, she said.

She also announced relaxation in service norms covering eligibility for promotion. In the Rural Development Department, eligibility for supervisors for getting promoted to the post of Junior Engineer would now be reduced to seven years from ten years, she said. A total of 157 associate professors serving in Government Medical College Hospitals would be promoted as professors.

Bringing 1,500 nurses under time-scale of pay, promotion for 605 village sanitary nurses, hike of Rs 5000 in honorarium for guest lecturers --from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 per month, setting up an administrative tribunal were among other announcements, she made.

On representations related to pay, issues like bringing those under consolidated pay into the time-scale bracket and parity will be examined by the pay commission, she said.

"I believe that the new announcements will pave the way for government employees work with a new vigour," she said. Legislators, including CK Thamizharasan (RPI) and Jawahirullah (Manithaneya Makkal Katchi), praised and welcomed the new announcements.

IIHMR Bangalore with SEMS Pune offers healthcare leadership training

Mumbai, 19th February, 2016: Over the past few years, there has been a rise in the number of hospital mismanagement cases in Maharashtra, some of which have resulted in fatalities. A simple solution to this prevalent yet avoidable problem is effective ground-up management at the healthcare delivery organisations. IIHMR Bangalore, in association with SEMS Pune, has devised a “Healthcare Leadership Training” programme for professionals who haven’t the luxury of leaving their jobs and going back to student life. It effectively addresses the innumerable critical issues faced by this sector.

The State of Maharashtra needs to increase proper healthcare infrastructure, especially in the rural areas. The other facet that needs urgent attention is the shortage of trained professionals in the healthcare sector. The patient-to-nurse ratio is quite less; as a result, there is a dire need of trained paramedics to run ambulance services efficiently. This calls for vocation training for emergency services in medical colleges.

Remarking on the need for effective management at hospitals, Dr. Amol Sahasrabuddhe, Manager of the Cardiac Department at Deenanath Mangeshkar Superspeciality Hospital & Research Centre listed out three major management specific challenges faced by hospitals today.

     1. Financial challenges– Healthcare managers face an array of financial pressures with respect to bearing insurance covers, high treatment and equipment costs for patients, and exorbitantly high salaries of hospital personnel. Also, incurring mandatory overheads like electricity, gases, generators, development and maintenance of infrastructure are an added cost.

     2. Maintaining quality of services –Patient satisfaction underpin a need for hospital managers to cast an eye on delivery smooth quality patient care by educating the significance of patient quality care delivery and strong supervision of medical operations among all hospital stakeholders. This beckons a need for proper hospital management and leadership education from healthcare institutions to prepare the workforce to cater to this need.

     3. Clinical management challenges –Quality and accreditation of care in hospitals need round the clock availability of clinical experts, nurses, junior doctors, multipurpose workers, emergency teams, and junior and middle level management’s proactive participation. However there is a paucity of qualified clinical experts – especially in Maharashtra – who are not well trained and up to speed with the technological advancements in the healthcare sector.

Dr. Dnyaneshwar Shelke, Chief Operating Officer at BVG Maharashtra Emergency Medical Services shared his insights on the challenges faced by emergency medical services (EMS) management. He said, “One of the most prevalent management specific challenges faced by EMS personnel is to match the EMS and healthcare requirements to the skill levels of the professionals. There is also a mismatch between the values and ethics of the organisation and the values and ethics of the individual healthcare professional. In order to tackle these challenges, it is essential to have effective management at every level so that emergency healthcare delivery is cogent and efficient.”

Pointing out the need for a healthcare management programme, Dr. Biranchi N Jena, Director of IIHMR, Bangalore said, “In order to ensure that the candidates entering the field of healthcare management, IIHMR has deviseda short-term training programme made specifically for working professionals and the syllabus is constructed to meet the requirements of the healthcare industry. The programme focuses necessary skills to tackle complex management issues and develop creative solutions to critical problems. The training programme is open to professionals from different fields of healthcare such as nurses, dentists, lab technicians, pharmacists and corporate medicine professionals.”

NABET (National Accreditation Board for Education and Training) has accredited IIHMR Bangalore as the first leading hospital and healthcare consultant organisation to provide assistance to healthcare organisations on NABH accreditation via which students are given exposure in realms such as quality improvement, patient satisfaction, and infection control. Apart from the short-term training programme, IIHMR Bangalore also offers a full-time post graduate diploma course specialising in Health, Hospital and Information Technology management (HIT). As the program has set high precedent healthcare management, the admissions for the batch of 2016 are open and the last date for submission of applications is July 29th 2016.

Right-wing group sends Rs 1L cheque to Justice Karnan, asks him to leave the country

Coimbatore: A local Hindu outfit has condemned controversial Madras High Court judge Justice C S Karnan for his outbursts against the judiciary and claimed to have sent him a letter and a Rs one lakh cheque, requesting him to leave the country.

Indu Makkal Katchi, a Hindu outfit, claimed to have sent the letter along with the cheque to Madras High Court judge Justice C S Karnan, asking him to migrate to any country, if he so desired. IMK President Arjun Sampath, in the letter, criticised the judge for speaking against the judicial system in India, "thus disrespecting the Constitution."

Sampath referred to Justic Karnan's recent remarks that he was a victim of caste discrimination in the judicial system and that if his birthright was cancelled, he would migrate to another country where there was no caste discrimination.

"This has become a fashion for anybody to speak against India and try creating religious and caste divisions and discrimination, without any respect to the constitution. It is high time we teach such persons a lesson," he told. "If Karnan accepts the cheque, he has to mention which county he is migrating to," he said to a question.

Sampath said he has also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue and requested him to take stringent action against Karnan and allow him to migrate to any country of his choice.

Justice Karnan had on February 15 "stayed" the Chief Justice of India's order, transferring him to Calcutta High Court, which was suspended later that day by the Supreme Court with a direction that he not be assigned any judicial work.

To this, Justice Karnan had said he would 'order' lodging an FIR under SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities Act) against the two apex court judges who gave the direction.

~Tots Celebrate Pan-Indian Cultural Heritage~

February 20, 2016: The Trio Tots Centre in Sahakarnagar witnessed vibrant culture and scintillating colors as the tots donned costumes to represent Indian culture in all its glory. This extravagant exhibit came as a part of the Trio Tots annual day event that unfolded on Saturday, 20th February, 2016. Ms. Anju Cherian, Founder, Baby Sensory- a cognitive development programme for newborns, was the Chief Guest of the event. The theme of the event was “Padharo Mhare Desh – Welcome to My Land – India”. The tiny tots highlighted the vibrancy of the cultural heritage of India donning traditional attires of cultures from around the India and introduced the audience to lesser known facts about the States.

The sweetest slice of the day arrived as the tots decorated the stage with high spirits and engaging performances. It was a delighted sight as the little ones swayed to Goan beats, performed a synchronized Kashmiri Rouf. Another interesting performance that left the audience spellbound was Kalaripayaytu- a martial art influenced dance form from Kerala. Students further stepped up the tempo with folk dances such as Garbha, Brita dance from West Bengal, Assam’s Bihu, folk dance of Karnataka and Punjab’s own Bhangra. The event focused on throwing light on the diverse cultures of the country and enlightening children about of the wealth of heritage India owns.

“It is important to establish a sense of solidarity among children from a young age, so that as they grow up they learn to adapt to the diversity around them. The theme of the event was centered around diversity so that the children would be able to not only see diversity, but also experience it themselves and in the meantime enjoy it,” said Mr. Naveen, MD, Trio World Academy.

Trio tots, the pre-school wing of Trio World Academy, recently also set stone in HSR Layout, providing parents an opportunity to introduce their toddlers to a creative and engaging learning atmosphere.
