Sensex up 57 points in early trade

Mumbai: The benchmark BSE Sensex rose over 57 points in early trade on buying by domestic investors and foreign funds ahead of IIP and inflation data scheduled to be released later in the day amid firm Asian cues. Also, the NSE Nifty again crossed the 7,700-mark.

The 30-share index was 57.05 points or 0.23 per cent higher at 25,079.21 in early trade with sectoral indices led by consumer durables, oil&gas, healthcare, auto, realty and banking in the positive zone.

The gauge had rallied 348.32 points in yesterday's trade. The National Stock Exchange's Nifty regained the crucial 7,700-mark by rising 30.25 points or 0.39 per cent to 7,701.65.

Dealers said widening of positions by participants ahead of key economic data -- industrial production (IIP) for February and consumer price index (CPI) for March -- to be released after market closing today and a firm trend in other Asian bourses influenced sentiment.

Moreover, expectations of a normal monsoon this year, too had a positive impact, they said. The government yesterday said after two years of deficient rainfall, monsoon this year is expected to be normal.

In regional markets, Japan's Nikkei was up 1.19 per cent while Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.26 per in early trade today. China's main Shanghai Composite Index, however, fell by s0.54 per cent. The US Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.12 per cent lower in yesterday's trade.

Rupee gains 5 paise against dollar in early trade

Mumbai: Rupee edged up by 5 paise to 66.39 against dollar in the early trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange on increased selling of the American currency by exporters and banks.

Besides, a higher opening in the domestic stock markets and sustained foreign fund inflows supported the rupee but dollar's strength against other currencies overseas capped the gains.

Yesterday, the rupee had moved up by 3 paise to close at 66.44 on increased selling of US dollar by banks and exporters. Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex rose further by 57.05 points or 0.23 per cent at 25,079.21 in early trade.

Amritsar: BSF personnel today recovered heroin worth Rs 9.50 crore in international market along the International Border in Amritsar sector.

Acting on a tip-off, BSF jawans of the Mohinder border outpost conducted a search and seized two packets of heroin, together weighing 1.9 Kg worth around Rs 9.50 crore on the international market, BSF Punjab Frontier DIG, R S Katariya said.

Yet again, dance maestro Sandip Soparrkar dressed in his favorite designer Deepak Shah cloths, looked in great spirits as he hosted the press conference to announce dance associates, NGO tie up and dynamic jury of Phoenix Marketcity presents "India Dance Week". The stars together also unveiled the trophy and the logo of this prestigious dance festival which is in its 3rd year now at the European themed courtyard space, Dublin Square, Phoenix Marketcity.

"India Dance Week" is the first ever two day dance festival celebrated on International Dance Day in India (29-30th April), where varied dance forms be it Indian or International classical, Indian or international folk, Ballroom, Hip Hop or contemporary all come together on one single platform. The day two is the mega competition day where participants come from different parts of the country and perform on varied dance styles.

Sandip Soparrkar hosted the introduction ceremony of this unique dance fest at the Dublin Square, Phoenix Marketcity, Kurla which was attended by the esteemed jury consisting of Actor Rahul Roy, actor Gaurav Gera, actress Avika Gor, singer actress Sanober Kabir and Japanese dancer Ryoko De.

Dance Maestro also introduced Roadies Fame actor Raj Kumar Singh and actor Ssumier Pasricha as the hosts for "3rd India Dance Week". Sandip happily announced tie ups with two NGO's - Advitya foundation and PETA India. Actor Amit Dolawat and Actress Sharbani Mukherjee represented as the Voice of the NGO's respectively.

The evening started with enthusiastic Indian classical and folk dance performances from Uma Rele’s ‘Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya’ followed by ballerinas from Villoo Bharucha's School of Ballet. Brian Fernandes' troupe performed hip hop and street dances and Sandip Soparrkar's Ballroom Studio presented some Classic Ballroom dances. At the launch meet Advitya children dance and so did dancers dressed as elephant and tiger supporting PETA.

The dynamic jury unveiled the trophy, cut the traditional cake, and looked very cheery and upbeat while performing impromptu dance moves on stage on Om Shanti Om title track.

Speaking on the occasion choreographer Sandip Soparrkar said, “I am thankful to Phoenix Marketcity, Kurla for hosting the 3rd year of this unique dance festival. This is one fest that brings all types of dances and dancers together and bonds them in one single thread."

The "3rd India Dance Week" has begun with a call for registrations and auditions for dance enthusiasts across the country with no age bar. So anyone and everyone who is a dance lover can apply for the grand competition. Mr. Rajendra Kalkar, President (West) of Phoenix Marketcity, Kurla said "We are glad that India Dance Week is growing year after year, we have already received applications from all over the country in just two days of the announcement. Missouri State University extends deadline for Undergraduate Courses application for the fall (July) 2016 session, to April 30

* Additionally, Indian students will benefit from University’s ‘Out-of-State Fee Waiver Programme’, reducing the tuition fee by almost 50%!

Mumbai, April 12, 2016: In what is particularly good news for Indian students, Missouri State University (MSU), one of the oldest and most reputed universities of Midwest US has extended its deadline for applying to Undergraduate Courses for the fall (July) 2016 session. The new deadline is April 30, 2016, now.

The most sought after undergraduate courses among international students at MSU are Bachelor in Material Sciences, Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Undergraduate Programme in Communication, Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship major, Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems major, Bachelor of Science in Accounting major and many more.

“To ease the pressure of 10+2 students who are applying for Undergraduate Courses, we have extended the deadline till April 30, 2016. They can still apply for a course of their choice and we will process the application within a time frame of 3 to 4 weeks so that they join the upcoming Fall 2016 intake”, stated Colonel Kent D Thomas, Assistant Vice President, International Programmes, Missouri State University, US. Colonel Thomas will be in India this month from April 24 to 30, visiting various partner institutions and high schools in India.

The most significant being University’s decision to apply “Out-of-State Fee Waiver Programme” on Indian students too, which will reduce the annual fee by almost 50%! The student must meet the SAT requirement (above the general entry requirements) to be eligible for this scholarship.

A total of 30 members took part in the session and were benefited by the training. The session was conducted by Dr Rahul Ramteke, Consultant Cardiology, Columbia Asia hospital-Ghaziabad. The members were enlightened about the importance of having basic life support training and how crucial it can be in the time of emergencies. The points highlighted were how this training can be life saving in the time of illnesses & injuries where each second till the time patient reaches a hospital.

Speaking on the session Dr Rahul Ramteke, Cardiologist, Columbia Asia Hospital said, “Imagine a scenario in any workplace in Ghaziabad where a worker collapses with a sudden cardiac arrest and it is left to the colleagues to take some immediate steps to revive him/her before an ambulance arrives. Hardly anyone amongst us is trained to act in such a situation. Not only is the awareness among common people grossly lacking when it comes to medical emergency response, our behavior is also governed by several myths.

For example, we try to immediately pour water in the mouth of a person who has fainted, when this can actually choke the person, rather than revive him/her. This is why basic emergency response training is so important. Hence, we decided to conduct these sessions with local Ghaziabad residents who can be prepared for medical emergencies like these & help save a life”.

Mumbai, 13th April, 2016: The presentation ceremony of the prestigious Padma Shri was held today in the historic Durbar Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Continuing the tradition, the Hon’ble President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee conferred the Padma Shri to Madhu Pandit Dasa, Chairman of The Akshaya Patra Foundation. At the ceremony, illustrious personalities recognised for contributions in varied fields were also present.

Shri Madhu Pandit Dasa was honoured with the recognition for the distinguished service rendered by Akshaya Patra for the children of India. On the occasion,he thanked the Government of India for the recognition. With regard to the honour, he said, “I dedicate this award to Srila Prabhupada, a true visionary who wanted to see a hunger free world. This recognition shall give immense encouragement to the Akshaya Patra team to reach greater heights. It is our humble service of providing nutrition to the government school children through the Akshaya Patra programme. It is an inspiration for me and the entire team at Akshaya Patra to reach out to many more hungry children of this country. Quality food for these children is essential for quality education that will in turn create citizens who can think for themselves and help develop good character.”

Madhu Pandit Dasa designed the first centralised kitchen of Akshaya Patra, to provide mid-day meals to underserved children in the Government schools of Bengaluru rural district during July 2000. Under his inspiring leadership and impeccable commitment, the organisation grew unceasingly towards its mission of feeding ‘5 million children by 2020.’

Akshaya Patra partners with the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India and various State Governments as one of the most admired Public Private Partnerships in education and child welfare. Scientific studies conducted by leading research organisations such as AC Nielsen and Sigma clearly established the positive impact of its mid-day meal programme.

New Delhi, April 2016: MY FM announced the winner of the second season of first ever radio reality show called “Paiso Ka Ped”. Mayor of Jaipur- Nirmal Nahata, was present at the event and felicitated the winner. As a part of this activity the participants were supposed to hold the specially fabricated tree made with coins and currency notes. Whoever amongst the participants managed to hold the tree for the longest duration took away the prize.  

For this three day long activity, Paiso ka Ped was installed at the World Trade Park mall in Jaipur. After screening, 30 participants were selected who contested for Rs.5 lakh which was prize money of the activity. The winner for this 3 days activity was announced on Sunday, 10th April, 2016.

Speaking on the occasion Harrish Bhatia, CEO, MY FM, says, “It’s quite overwhelming to see a unique initiative shape so well in the second year. People turned out in huge numbers to be a part of this activity, which is a great achievement for MY FM. This is path breaking for us and we will aim on more such innovations to the industry. With this initiative we got the concept of a reality show for radio, which is a benchmark.”

Viplove Gupte, Chief Programming Officer, MY FM, says, “The money doesn’t grow on trees. Almost all of us have heard this, at least once in our life time. We wanted to change it. And hence, last year we organised the unique and almost unbelievable radio reality show. It was India’s first show of its kind where selected candidates were required to stand stuck to the “Money Tree” uninterrupted for 3 days at a stretch. The one who survives stuck to the tree won a cash prize of Rs 5 lakhs.

This year in season 2, the moment we announced it, Pink City went in to an overdrive. In less than 3 days we had over 5000 registrations. After a 2 day long rigorous audition process, we narrowed down to final 60 who underwent a physical endurance test at Fortis Hospital, Jaipur. The final 30 contested underwent various tasks and this continued for 73 hours where at regular intervals, the contestants were eliminated. We are extremely happy with the amazing response given by Jaipur. Apart from participation, they also turned up in huge numbers at the venue World Trade Park. The concept is amazing, the execution this year was superb and next year, we will present an even better option.”

Feeling ecstatic about the win, Urvish Kumar, said, “I am very happy to have won this competition and grateful to MY FM for organizing it. It was a tough competition and everybody played very hard.”

The show was a huge success like last year and saw enthusiastic participation from the people of Jaipur city. Thousands of people witnessed the activity and the winner, Urvish Kumar, walked away with prize money of INR 5 lakhs.

Robyn Kershaw is a producer and company director with RKP, a film and TV production company and RKPix a company focussed on multi-platform works. RKP and RKPix have produced feature films, TV, games, animation, short films and webisodes. Robyn is currently in development with Dollhouse Pictures on their first feature film and a number of Indian filmmakers including Nandita Das.
