Chennai: When Tamil Nadu votes on May 16, one of the keenly-watched contest would be between incumbent Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and transgender C Devi (33).

Devi is contesting the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2016 from the high-profile RK Nagar constituency on a Naam Tamilar Katchi ticket. She contests the claim that she was given the ticket from the high-profile constituency just because she is a transgender.

“I have worked with Seeman’s Naam Tamilar Katchi ever since the party was floated. I empathise with the cause of Eelam Tamils and care about the general well-being of Tamils. I will strive to provide quality education and health care in the constituency,” she told The Hindu.

“Why should men and women alone decide the fate of our country? The third gender must also have a say in the affairs of the country, is it not?” she asked. While Devi is realistic about her chances in the elections, she insists: “If this triggers a change in how political parties view the community, I will be happy.” Her agenda is clear: uprooting the Dravidian parties and the Congress from Tamil Nadu.

Release of Directory of Mental Health Services for Bangalore and Round Table on Mental Health and mental illness in India at Bangalore based Azim Premji University

Bangalore, April 7, 2016: Jerry Pinto, writer and journalist released a directory of Mental health services compiled by students of the MA Development programme, Azim Premji University.  The event was part of a 2 day Round Table called Taking Charge: understanding critical issues in mental health. The round table brought together academics, mental health professionals, survivors, care-givers and students to share narratives, perspectives on mental health and an understanding of the range of interventions and care.

“The mental health directory is a fantastic effort by the students and fills a critical gap in information in the city. It is possibly the first of its kind and provides information in easily accessible ways and the introductions to the different sections go beyond just the psychiatrist and mental hospitals as the first point of contact. It is helpful for a user to decide what kind of support to seek out,” said Jerry Pinto releasing the directory.

Speaking about the event, Shreelata Rao Seshadri, faculty and convener of the round table said, “Our attempt has been to break the silence and invisibility of a critical issue like mental health in India and bring a range of people from across the country together to share, learn from each other and sharpen the strategies of working with young people on mental health issues”

Over 25 participants from diverse backgrounds ranging from psychiatrists to social workers came together to address the emerging concerns around Youth and Mental Health in the Indian context. There was a special focus on setting the context of youth mental health issues and the nature of support, interventions and efforts by different stakeholders. Significant among stakeholders are institutions of higher education.  It created a space for sharing of the issues and strategies that have worked at a range of educational institutions in promotive practices and providing mental health services to their students.

The Round Table was able to deepen an understanding of the recent changes in the structure of mental health service delivery, the structure (public or private) of the mental health system, the Mental Health Act and its implementation, as well as critical concerns, opportunities and challenges they open up.

As students who have done a course on Mental health and living in a community we were able to listen to different kinds of initiatives that really make a difference in addressing issues of stigma, shame and actively work with people out of hospital settings and demonstrate success in building sensitive communities and responsive systems, said Saumil Sharma a student of the university and part of the organizing team of the event.

Following healthy lifestyles and keeping your key indicators like blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol under check are crucial elements of diabetes control. However, in India, awareness about the disorder, its risks factors and potential complications remains abysmally low. This often leads people to believe that diabetes is not a life-threatening disorder.

“With India seeing an unprecedented rise of diabetes in people of all age groups, it is incumbent upon the government to provide necessary interventions and solutions. With Diabetacare, we will ensure that people of our state have enhanced access to comprehensive diabetes screening and the ability to seek holistic advanced care options” said Shri U.T. Khader, Hon'ble Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of Karnataka.

Taking a proactive approach, the state government invited Diabetacare to help devise solutions that will benefit the people of Karnataka through effective clinical management of this chronic condition as well as through preventative care.

At the health camp at Vidhan Soudha, experts from Diabetacare held health screenings of people above 35 years of age, and educated them about the importance of maintaining vital statistics such as weight, blood pressure and lifestyle habits under control.

“The alarming rise of diabetes in India can be checked via proactive interventions like the one made by Government of Karnataka. Because of the massive scale of the problem, it is vital that the state and the private sector work together to devise and deploy solutions” said Dr Sanjiv Agarwal, Founder &MD, Diabetacare.

People who have a family history of diabetes are more predisposed to the disorder as compared to individuals who do not have a family history. For this reason, such people are advised special precautions and screenings after 35 years of age. However, this does not mean that people whose parents do not have diabetes are free of risk.

Diabetes multiples risk of several other lifestyle disorders including hypertension, cardiovascular disease and stroke. Diabetes is also a leading cause of renal failure, blindness and gangrenous foot ulcers that often necessitate limb amputation.

According to a World Health Organization (WHO) fact sheet on diabetes, the global burden of type-2 diabetes is expected to increase to 438 million by 2030 from 285 million people (recorded in 2010). In India this increase is estimated to be 58%, from 51 million people in 2010 to 87 million in 2030.With over 67 million Indians already recognized with having diabetes and 77 million pre-diabetics, the country is home to the world’s second largest population of diabetics after China.

Chennai: Hours after DMK treasurer MK Stalin invited Makkal DMDK to meet party chief Karunanidhi, the breakaway group of the Vijayakant-led party on Monday extended unconditional support to them.

Makkal DMDK was founded yesterday by expelled functionaries of DMDK, who supported an alliance with DMK opposing the party's tie-up with People's Welfare Front.

Yesterday, after Makkal DMDK top leader VC Chandrakumar said that his outfit members would call on DMK leadership if they were invited, Stalin today said that party chief Karunanidhi was ready to meet them.

Following this, Makkal DMDK functionaries led by Chandrakumar called on both Stalin and Karunanidhi. Later, speaking to reporters, Chandrakumar said that they offered unconditional support to DMK.

"We did not make any demand that we should be given a specified number of seats. Makkal DMDK is extending unconditional support to the DMK," he said.

"We would like to fight polls and for that purpose, whatever may be the number of seats that we may be given, we are ready to work with DMK and we have extended our unconditional support," he said. Chandrakumar was the propaganda secretary of DMDK before he was expelled from the party and he was also the party whip in the outgoing Assembly.

Along with others, he had revolted the decision to tie-up with PWF and had also alleged that DMDK founder Vijayakant's wife Premalatha was calling the shots vis-a-vis in party, a charge stoutly denied by her.

Latur (Maharashtra): The ten railway wagons with five lakh liters of water which left from Miraj Junction railway station yesterday, reached the parched region of Latur in Marathwada region today. On April 8, one of two goods trains carrying 50 wagons of water for drought-affected areas of Latur departed from Kota workshop for Miraj in Pune division.

"It's an occasion of happiness for us thanks to the government. The atmosphere here right now similar to that of Ramzan celebrations. People from all over the town have come to watch the train. We were able to disperse 200 litres of water in 15 days to the people, now thanks to the train we can do that in five to six days," Latur Mayor Shaikh Akhtar told ANI here.

Talking about the scramble for taking credit over the temporary solution to the water crisis in the region, he added that the people really did not care who got the credit for the entire initiative as long as the water reached them.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Latur asserted that what the previous state government had failed to come through with in ten years, the current regime had managed in three months.

"In the previous government, the Chief Minister belonged to Latur and what he was not able to do in ten years, the BJP government managed in three months. This is the first initiative of its kind where a water train has been sent to Latur and this occasion is nothing short of Diwali for us. The Congress failed to provide any fail but under the leadership of Suresh Prabhu and Devendra Fadnavis, we achieved success," BJP leader Shailesh Lahoti told ANI.

The locals in the drought-hit Latur District of Maharashtra are forced to travel long distances for water, as it is experiencing an unprecedented water scarcity this summer.

According to the villagers, the administration sends limited water tankers to the village. The villagers either have to buy water or get them from the nearby farm. The women of the village have to bring water from across two kilometres. The villagers spent almost the whole day sourcing water.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had earlier said that the state government and the railway ministry were working hard to bring relief to people in drought-affected region.

ColombO: Former Sri Lankan batsman Sanath Jayasuriya is all set to take over as the country's chief selector once again, a year after he stepped down from the job.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) president Thilanga Sumathipala virtually confirmed the news, saying that they were planning to appoint Jayasuriya as the new chairman of selectors in a bid to take the nation's cricket to a new path.

According to SLC vice president Mohan de Silva, former wicketkeeper-batsman Romesh Kaluwitharana and former off spinner Ranjith Madurasingha will also be a part of the committee, ESPNcricinfo reported.

Jayasuriya, who held the post from January 2013 to March 2015, will replace Aravinda de Silva and is likely to remain in the post up to the 2019 World Cup.

The SLC vice president also insisted that Aravinda's committee, which is due to select the Test squad for the upcoming England tour, would now take the decision in consultation with Jayasuriya. Under Jayasuriya's tenure, Sri Lanka have won World T20 and a Test series in England in 2014, before making a quarterfinal exit at the 2015 World Cup.
