New Delhi: The government on Tuesday indicated that action could be taken against "prominent people" who are trying to conceal taxable income as agricultural earnings.

"Many prominent people are doing this. Please do not say it is political victimisation if names come out afterwards," Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said in the Rajya Sabha.

Several opposition members, including from the Janata Dal-United and Samajwadi Party, cited reports that large amounts of black money were being shown as agriculture income.

Sharad Yadav of Janata Dal-United said reports suggested that Rs.2,000 lakh crore of income has been concealed as agriculture earnings. Jaitley said anyone abusing the provisions of the Income Tax Act could be investigated and proceeded against. Under the existing norms, agricultural income is exempted from income tax.

Some members alleged that the government might be thinking of starting to tax the farm incomes henceforth. There could be a "conspiracy of taxing agriculture income" which must be opposed, said Ram Gopal Yadav of the Samajwadi Party.

Congress member Digvijay Singh said instead of "threatening", the finance minister should reveal names. "He is misleading the house. Do not threaten us," Digvijay Singh said.

Mother Teresa to be canonised on Sep 4: Pope

Vatican city: The Pope during consistory of cardinals on Tuesday announced September 4 as the date for Mother Teresa's canonisation, the media reported.

After months of anticipation, the date for Mother Teresa's canonisation was announced as September 4, which this year will also mark a special jubilee for workers and volunteers of mercy, Catholic News Agency cited Pope Francis as saying.

The Pope had cleared the way in December for sainthood for the Nobel peace laureate, who died in 1997 aged 87. The Albania-born nun and missionary was by far the most high-profile of the five candidates for sainthood considered by the Vatican panel on Tuesday.

It is not clear whether the Pope will bow to appeals from the Catholic church in India and travel to Calcutta for the ceremony or, as Vatican sources say is more likely, preside over one in Rome, the Guardian reported.

Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, Macedonia. After joining the Sisters of Loretto at the age of 17, she was sent to Calcutta, where she later contracted tuberculosis, and was sent to rest in Darjeeling.

On the way, she felt what she called an order from God to leave the convent and live among the poor. After she left her convent, Mother Teresa began working in the slums, teaching poor children, and treating the sick in their homes.

Known across the world as the Mother, Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work with the poor, sick, old and lonely in the slums of Kolkata.

She died on September 5, 1997, and was beatified just six years later by Pope John Paul II on October 19, 2003. More than 300,000 pilgrims went to Rome in 2003 for Teresa's beatification - the first step towards sainthood.

Mumbai International Airport inducted into the maiden ACREX Hall of Fame powered by Danfoss at ACREX 2016

ACREX is South Asia’s leading industry trade show in the fields of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration (HVAC&R)

Mumbai, 16 March 2016: Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) project received the honour of being the first organisation to be inducted into the Hall of Fame at ACREX 2016, one of India’s largest industry exhibitions. The team behind the success of the project which includes GVK CSIA, L&T, Blue Star received the honor on behalf of the stakeholders involved in the making of MIAL in a glittering award ceremony held at the Taj Santa Cruz.

ACREX Hall of Fame is an industry benchmark instituted by Danfoss India in partnership with ISHRAE (Indian Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers) to recognize the excellence achieved in conserving energy by commercial buildings in the Indian subcontinent. The coveted recognition aims to encourage energy efficiency among industry stakeholders and showcase success stories in the HVAC space in India. This prestigious award showcases CSIA as an energy efficient and sustainable HVAC venture.

What sets CSIA apart from rest of the projects is that it imbibes features like improved indoor air quality, an air conditioning system that is integrated with the rest of the BMS, and the use of technology to achieve a high energy productivity index which result in reduced energy usage, better air quality and high cost savings.

“Today, there are HVACR solutions which are energy efficient and cost saving which are available today which can be directly implemented in new and existing projects to make them energy efficient. The focus should be on spreading awareness on adoption of these technologies in our industry,” said Mr. Ravichandran Purushothaman, President, Danfoss India. “ACREX Hall of Fame recognizes the cutting edge work that these organizations are doing to be a benchmark for replicating sustainable solutions,” he added.

Acknowledging the award, G V Sanjay Reddy, Managing Director, Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (MIAL) said, “Sustainable infrastructure development is pivotal to our country’s journey towards becoming an industrial nation by 2020. By building infrastructure we are building the nation and this project is our dream for the city of dreams. We are happy that MIAL is inducted to Acrex Hall of fame which will showcase our project as best case story in the country.”

As a part of the event, Danfoss India and ISHRAE also launched a guide book towards efficient project management and delivery for stakeholders in the HVAC industry. Through the IAPD guidebook, the right framework for stakeholders can be developed for the HVAC industry.

10 HVAC projects were nominated, out of many entries across India, which were based on selection criteria such as Energy Performance Index, Indoor Environment Quality initiatives, Energy Saving Initiatives including Renewable Energy, Building Management System and one year operational data was scrutinized for this.

The theme for the 17th edition of ACREX is Make in India-Infinite Opportunities for HVAC&R and Building Services Industry capturing the pulse of the government initiatives to promote India’s manufacturing capabilities.

“HVAC is an important focus area for India as two thirds of buildings that will exist in India in 2030 are yet to be built. This throws light on the need to build awareness about energy efficiency and smart HVAC for upcoming infrastructure in the country. There is a need to actively promote energy efficiency in new and existing buildings. ISHRAE through ACREX, wanted to select a project which is fit to be placed in the hall of fame and is iconic by way of energy efficiency, innovation, technology and intelligent in building design,” said Mr. K. Ramachandran, President, ISHRAE

Royal Enfield launches Himalayan- the most definitive motorcycle for your Himalayan adventure

Himalayan now available in India for booking starting March 17, 2016

Available in Rs. 175840 (on-road) in Chennai

Chennai, India, March 16, 2016: Royal Enfield, the fastest growing motorcycle brand in the world, today launched the Himalayan—a motorcycle purpose-built for adventure and touring in the Himalayas. Bringing together 60 years of Himalayan riding experiences in a completely ground-up design, and powered by a new LS 410 engine, the Royal Enfield Himalayan paves the way for a purer, non-extreme and more accessible form of adventure touring in India.

In fact, it’s extremely capable off road capabilities make it adept for riding though potholed urban jungles as it does for treacherous mountain trails.

One of the most anticipated motorcycles of 2016, Royal Enfield Himalayan is available in two signature colour options—Granite and Snow and is open for bookings across all Royal Enfield dealerships across the country in a phased manner.

At the launch of the Himalayan, Mr Siddhartha Lal, MD & CEO, Eicher Motors Ltd. said, “Himalayan is the culmination of Royal Enfield’s 60 years of enduring history in its spiritual home—the Himalayas. Our single biggest insight in all these years of riding has been that the best motorcycle for the Himalayas is not one that tries to dominate its landscape, but one that is able to go with its flow. Large adventure tourers that currently define this category, do not fare well in the Himalayas as they are very heavy, extremely complicated, intimidating and not really designed for this environment. With its purpose-built ground-up design, the Himalayan is a simple and capable go-anywhere motorcycle that will redefine adventure touring in India.”

Built on a rugged duplex split cradle frame designed and developed by Harris Performance, the Himalayan is stable and agile in equal parts. A strong mono shock rear suspension with linkage allows for longer travel and delivers a smoother ride experience regardless of terrain. The Himalayan’s 220 mm ground clearance ensures it gobbles up obstacles comfortably be it in the Himalayas, rocky river beds or at stream crossings. An optimal wheel size combination allows for better control while riding over rocks and ruts.

The Himalayan is powered by a completely new and evolved overhead camshaft engine platform that forms the base for its new long stroke LS 410 engine. The all new engine delivers high torque and usable power at lower RPMs. This makes for smooth riding in higher gears at lower speeds, making it easy to climb hills, or to maneuver through traffic. Modern design and materials of the engine translate to increased efficiency and low maintenance, and the engine can go 10,000 kilometers between oil changes.

Speaking at the launch of the Himalayan, Mr Rudratej (Rudy) Singh, President Royal Enfield said, “What excites me about our new motorcycle, is that it fundamentally builds on Royal Enfield’s core philosophy of balancing aspiration with access. It allows both seasoned riders as well as enthusiasts to do more with just one motorcycle. The Himalayan serves the purpose of a seasoned rider and at the same time opens the roads (pun not intended) to many more people who will get the confidence that they can ride on and off the road less travelled, going beyond their day-to-day commuting needs.”

“Functionally - the Himalayan’s non-intimidating spartan design, a flat torque curve, accessible seat height and long suspension travel alongside the ease of ownership, make the Himalayan is an extremely versatile motorcycle that is adept for long rides while equally being the definitive choice to navigate our urban jungles. Towards creating and growing a new segment which offers an option for adventure loving motorcycling enthusiasts we are offering the new Himalayan at a price of Rs. xxx(Ex-showroom) in Tamil Nadu and Rs.175840 (on-road) in Chennai”, Rudy added.

Touring utility is built inherently into the Himalayan. A 15 litre fuel tank provides a long range of approximately 450 kilometers. Luggage mounting points, for hard panniers, soft luggage and jerry cans are integral to the motorcycle’s design. A simple instrument cluster keeps track of speed, direction, ambient temperature, travel time, service intervals and multiple trip distances. Most importantly, an ergonomical sync between footpegs, handlebar & seat height provide a comfortable upright riding posture that is necessary for long rides. An accessible 800mm seat height with lower mass-balance ensure ease of planting feet on ground for complete control. Royal Enfield Himalayan comes fitted with dual-purpose tyres that lend a confident grip and performance across a range of conditions. In addition to complete braking control, the 300mm front and 240mm rear disc brakes help to reduce braking effort.

Royal Enfield has also launched meticulously designed, purpose-built protective riding gear that caters to the long range tourer travelling to unpredictable places, terrains and climates. The protective gear range includes the 4-season Royal Enfield Darcha riding suit made in collaboration with REV’IT; versatile touring jackets and trousers with Cordura, protective armour, removable thermal liners and breathable waterproof lining. The collection also has riding gloves, riding trousers and riding boots.

Royal Enfield has invested significant time and effort in testing the Himalayan extensively with experts and across multiple terrains for both off-road and on-road manners. Starting from the Bruntingthorpe airfield in UK to the race track in Sriperumbudur, Chennai; from off-road terrains to urban settings and then in real world riding conditions in the Himalayas; the motorcycle has clocked lakhs of kilometers and cumulative mileage before hitting the production line.

The Himalayan is more than the sum of its parts; not only does it deliver on its intent of being a purpose-built motorcycle for the Himalayas, it is also extremely versatile and designed to be your only motorcycle.

Pricing & Availability

Royal Enfield Himalayan will be available in Bangalore for Rs. 184,316 (on-road), in Kolkata for Rs. 181,517 (on-road), in Chennai for Rs. 175,840 (on-road), in Hyderabad for Rs. 176,580 (on-road), in Pune for Rs. 170,362 (on-road) and in Navi Mumbai for Rs. 171,065 (on-road).

Apollo Children’s Hospital performs India’s first successful combined cardiac and tracheal surgery on 11 month old Omani patient

March 16, 2016, Chennai: Apollo Children’s Hospital successfully performed for the first time in India a high-risk combined cardiac and tracheal surgery on a 11 month old Omani patient. The infant is said to be the first patient to receive a surgery of this kind in India.

Yaseen Essa Salim Saleem AL Ruqaishi, a Down’s syndrome patient who celebrates his first birthday this March, was diagnosed with not just congenital heart problems but also with life threatening narrowing of airway passages. These conditions caused repeated respiratory infections and increased risk of cardiac arrest for Yaseem. Oman doctors, realizing the need for a multi-disciplinary approach along with effective pre and post- operative care, referred Yaseem to Apollo children’s Hospital, Chennai.

VSD/PDA/ET

* A Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) is a defect in the ventricular septum, the wall dividing the left and right ventricles of the heart.

* A Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) is an unclosed hole in the aorta, which is the main artery that carries blood away from your heart to the rest of your body.

* An Endotracheal Tube (ET) is a catheter inserted into the windpipe to provide or protect an airway.

The Omani infant with large VSD (Ventricular Septal Defect) and PDA (Patent Ductus Arteriosus) was kept on ventilator for 2 months with congenital tracheal stenosis. The team at Apollo Children’s Hospital coordinated the transfer of the patient from Oman and took care of the preoperative procedures.

Upon arrival, it was found that the infant could only accommodate a size 3 ET (Endotracheal Tube) with continuous ET bleed, which led to cardiac arrest and was later revived by the intensive care team.

The combined cardiac and thoracic surgery lasted for six hours, with cardiac, thoracic, anesthesia and critical care teams working hand to hand to cure Yaseen’s heart defect and rectify his narrow airway passage in a short span of time, without risking the child’s life.

Talking on the risk involved in performing the procedure, Dr. Rajan Santosham, Thoracic Surgeon, said that, “It was a very challenging procedure considering the infant’s age and the fragile condition of both his heart and windpipe. But thanks to careful planning of our teams, from across cardiac to anesthesia, we were able to successfully perform the surgery.”

“The success of the procedure confirms the potential for safe and effective access to combined cardiac and tracheal surgeries to be performed in India. The child Yaseem is breathing naturally for the first time since 2 months of being on ventilator”, said Dr. Neville Solomon, Pediatric Cardio Thoracic Surgeon, Apollo Children’s Hospital, Chennai.

Yaseen, post-surgery, was shifted to the CTICU (Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit) and was brilliantly managed and provided assistance by the Critical Care Unit of Apollo Children’s Hospital, Chennai. Parents of Yaseen are happy that their child’s heart and airway passage are gradually recovering to function normally.

* Discussions include preparing supply chain for Industry 4.0

Pune, India — March 16, 2016 — Reiterating its commitment to partner India in developing a robust and sustainable supply chain ecosystem, GE organized its 4th Supplier’s Conference in Pune inviting more than 500 strategic suppliers of the company in India. In line with the ‘Make in India’ initiative, GE has been at the forefront by making India a global sourcing hub. GE’s current scale of sourcing and manufacturing from India is close to USD 2.3 billion annually, of which 50% of the products sourced in India are for GE’s global supply chain.

The annual GE Supplier’s Conference is among biggest supplier meets in India where suppliers of GE supporting both India and global businesses get together to discuss the way forward growth strategy and share experiences with GE global leadership. This year, the experts in the conference also discussed the importance of preparing the supply chain for Industry 4.0 and strengthening the India supply chain to meet global needs.

GE has been developing a supplier network to support its manufacturing activities for a number of its businesses such as aviation, transportation, renewables, healthcare, oil & gas and power. The company has been fostering localization by driving ‘In Country For Country’ approach. GE has ensured at least 50% local content in all the products manufactured by GE in India, thus presenting a huge business opportunity. Such a business strategy has also improved the cost efficiencies with shorter lead time for GE customers.

Addressing the conference, Banmali Agrawala, President & CEO, GE South Asia said, “India has been a growth driver for sourcing and supply chain for GE over the last five years and we are confident of seeing the trend continue. With the multi-modal manufacturing facility in Pune, which is one of GE’s top manufacturing facilities globally, we are looking ahead to implement lean and digital connect for all manufacturing processes across sectors in which GE is present today.”

Sharing his perspective, Amit Kumar, Director, Global Supply Chain, GE South Asia said “This conference serves as a key platform to share global and local sourcing strategies with Indian suppliers as well as conveying GE’s compliance and integrity benchmarks. India possesses an advantage in terms of scale and potential that can be leveraged for an industrial company like ours to grow further in the area of supply chain and manufacturing”.

(“Hitachi-Omron Terminal Solutions”) today announced that it established Hitachi Terminal Solutions India Private Limited (“Hitachi Terminal Solutions India”) in the Republic of India (Bangalore City) as an ATM manufacturing company, and will commence production in June 2016. The new company, which was set up with a capital of 1 billion INR, will produce 1,500 units of ATM per month at the end of FY 2016.

Aimed at strengthening the ATM business in India, Hitachi Terminal Solutions India will allow Hitachi-Omron Terminal Solutions to promptly accommodate the needs of the market, strengthen the cost competitiveness, shorten the production lead time from order entry to shipment and expand the business of Cash Recycling ATMs*1. Moreover, the operations of the manufacturing company will contribute to job creation and economic development in India. *1 The Cash Recycling ATMs recycle the deposited cash inside the ATMs and enable the deposited cash to be dispensed in future transactions.

“Hitachi-Omron Terminal Solutions entered the cash recycling ATM market in India at an early stage and has been providing ATMs that are suited to India’s environment, considering the quality, condition and usage of the banknotes, and solutions corresponding to needs of operational efficiency of financial institutions and the deposits of users.” said Tetsuji Shimojo,
