Chennai, Mar 12: Indian Plumbing Association Chennai Chapter celebrated World Plumbing day in Chennai. The chief guest architect Raghavendra distributed the prizes to the winners of the Environment painting competition for students.

As part of World Plumbing day, IPA has organised a painting competition for school students. More than 150 students participated in the two categories.

Abbas Lehry, Chairman, Arul, Vice Chairman, Joseph Mathew, Secretary Sivaprakasam, Sankar were present at the function. World Plumbing day was initiated by the World Plumbing Council each year to recognise the important role plays in the society, health and amenity.

Speaking at the function Raghavendra said, "It is crucial that plumbers are trained and provided with required skill-sets.” Plumbers in India play a key role, especially when India loses out on precious water due to leakages and bad plumbing. Through World Plumbing Day we would want to create awareness about the work this community is doing.”

Abbas Lehry, Chairman, "As real estate booms, several other sections gain importance, plumbing for example. With more complex buildings getting designed and constructed, there is a growing need of trained plumbers." There is a requirement of 12 lakh trained plumbers by 2020, while the current availability is 2.5 lakh, with most of them untrained or self-trained.

“As an industry, plumbing plays a paramount role in providing potable water, safe sanitation and water conservation apart from ensuring safety of buildings and their occupants. It is crucial that plumbers are trained and provided with required skill-sets", Lehry added.

Mr. Baru said the present government had assumed a hostile attitude towards its critics, and expressed hope that it would learn, as it was simply ‘ill-advised’. Mr. Modi’s problem was either he had ‘contempt’ for Delhi media, or he didn’t know how to get through to it.

"If you have a media strategy, you don’t need to have a media manager. If you don’t, you can hire one," he remarked, while answering a question by his interlocutor Sriram Karri. Media is not a homogenous entity, and the big mistake that the BJP as a party has made is to unnecessarily malign the media on the whole, due to its anger against a few, Mr. Baru said, and took strong objection to Minister V.K. Singh coining the term ‘presstitutes’, which is misogynistic. Admitting that corruption has reduced after the present government has taken over, he said a lot of hostility towards government is due to badmouthing of the media.

The names of three of the Paris attackers have appeared in the Islamic State's files, the media reported. Samy Amimour, Foued Mohamed-Aggad and Omar Ismail Mostefai, the three men who carried out the attack at the Bataclan theatre where 90 people died, were featured in the files leaked from the group, BBC reported. The three attacked the Bataclan during a concert by Eagles of Death Metal.

The IS files, obtained by German, British and Syrian media, have identified thousands of jihadi recruits from at least 40 countries. German officials have said that the files were genuine.

Around 22,000 fighters were identified by the documents, with one file for each recruit listing name, address and other information. However, many of the names given may be duplicates. The files indicate that the three men entered IS territory in 2013 and 2014.

Germany's Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere earlier said that the information contained in the files could help to prosecute IS fighters, and help prevent future recruitment. Files were first published online (documents in Arabic) by Zaman Al-Wasl, a Qatari-based Syrian news website.

Dutch media identified Abu Jihad al-Hollandi from the documents as Amsterdam teenager Achraf Bouamran, who was killed in a US air strike on the Syrian IS stronghold of Raqqa in January 2015.

Counter-terrorism police in Germany were studying the documents. "IS poses a severe threat... it is important for us to work together to counter this threat," British Home Secretary Theresa May said.

Sky News reported that the documents came from a man called Abu Hamed, an IS fighter who said he had become disillusioned with the group's leadership and stolen a memory stick from the head of the IS internal security force before handing it over in Turkey.

She said Government hospitals across the country are not in good shape, we in Telangana are relooking at the entire facility. We will have 1000 bedded hospitals at district level, 100 bedded hospitals at the constituency level and 30 bedded hospitals at the mandal level. Doctor availability is the biggest challenge at PHCs, we raised their salaries by 30% to motivate them to work in rural areas.

Mumbai: Cricket legend Rahul Dravid believes India are likely to make the semi-finals of the upcoming World Twenty20, to be played at home, but added that the knockouts will be all about which team does better on match day.

"India would make the top four, but after that, it's just a question of who has a better day in the semi-final and final. The good thing about this Indian team is they have good all around depth at the moment. Players like Hardik Pandya and Pawan Negi -- it just shows that they have got batting right down to No.8 and 9," said Dravid, who retired from the sport in 2012.

"This is a pretty formidable side at the moment and the all around ability of this team is what excites me. There are a lot of good, young, exciting players coming through. In Twenty20 cricket, the nature of the game is such, and with the small format, you can have a bad half-an-hour and you can lose the game very, very easily."

The 43-year-old, who is a member of the Laureus World Sports Academy, was speaking while visiting one of the most impoverished slums here to meet young people from the Laureus Sport for Good supported organisation - Magic Bus - operating in Mankhurd. The former skipper also praised the Indian bowling unit for having a large pool to select from.

"India have got six or seven bowlers to call upon in Indian conditions that they can use. It gives them sort of a good range of all-around ability. And then with Ashish Nehra bowling well up front and Jasprit Bumrah bowling well at the depth, they have actually got the two areas, which India were struggling in, covered," said the former right-handed batsman.

The World Twenty20 will be played from March 15 to April 3 across seven Indian cities with the final to be held at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Dravid, who played 164 Tests and 344 One-Day Internationals (ODI), further said that he expects teams like Australia, South Africa and the West Indies to do well in the tournament.

"Most teams have some very, very good players, good match-winners. Teams like Australia have got good depth in their side. A lot of players have played in subcontinent conditions through the Indian Premier League (IPL) so they have that experience of playing in India. Playing T20 cricket in India for a lot of teams and players is not new to them. They have played on all of these grounds. They know the conditions very, very well," said Dravid.

"South Africa with the likes of AB de Villiers, Quinton de Kock, Hashim Amla -- they are always going to be a dangerous team. The West Indies as well, match-winners, power hitters, all the way through. And then the subcontinent teams, Pakistan and Sri Lanka will probably have the quality spinners and if conditions suit them, they can be a handful as well."

Colombo: Sri Lankan Tamil prisoners, who launched a hunger strike demanding their release, called off their fast after a minister assured them of speedy trials.

As many as 13 former Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres launched the hunger strike on February 23 demanding the government expedite the cases against them or release them.

The prisoners called off the strike on Friday after Prisons Reforms and Rehabilitation Minister D. M. Swaminathan gave an assurance that he would discuss the issue with the attorney general's department officials, ColomboPage reported.

Four inmates who fell ill due to the hunger strike were admitted to the prison hospital. Meanwhile, students at the University of Jaffna on Friday launched a one day hunger strike to protest the imprisonment of Tamils.

Earlier, Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan had raised the issue in the house moving an adjournment. Sampanthan had also made an appeal to the political prisoners on fast to give it up.

​Mumbai, March 14th, 2016: ​Pune Anmol Ratn triumphed over Kolkata Babu Moshayes in their first match of the very glamorous Box Cricket League season 2. The last year’s finalists marched into the ground with confidence and followed the legacy by winning the first match like true champions. The team led by Varun Badola and Divyanka Tripathi performed extremely well as a team in the field.

Pune Anmol Ratn started with fielding and bowling and restricted the opponent’s score to 96 runs by the end of 10 overs. Celebrities like Rajeshwari and Tanya bowled excellently and only gave away 16 and 12 runs respectively. Captain Varun, Puneet, Vipul and Vineet were able to restrain them well to an average of less than 6 runs an over. PAR was a little shaken up when they lost 5 wickets in the first four overs itself. But they rose like a phoenix with the support of Tanya Abrol who was awarded the Woman of the Match. She came in at the 2nd over and stayed till the end of the match to crush the opposite team. Karam Rajpal who came in at the end brought us close to victory with 3 sixes by the end of the 8th over.

Divyanka Tripathi who did well at the field and was on the ground for the entire length of the match, shared her excitement with the audience by sharing Frooti packets at the fall of every wicket. New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday said he had asked officials to take stock of the damage done to crops due to sudden rains in the national capital.

"Have asked (the) divisional commissioner to assess damage to crops of farmers in Delhi due to unseasonal rains," Kejriwal tweeted. Delhi witnessed unexpected showers over the weekend.

Chennai: Demanding strict action against the honour killing that took place in Udumalaipettai district of Tamil Nadu yesterday, the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) on Monday said those who inject venom in the minds of the people on the basis of caste are the worst enemies of the society.

"It is very shocking that the land of prayers is standing out to be the land of honour killings. I am ashamed of it. Social awareness must be injected into the minds of the people. Those who are whipping up the flames of casteism.injecting the venom and the poison in the minds of the people on the basis of casteism are the worst enemies of the society," MDMK founder Vaiko told.

"Whichever party they belong..a strong action should be taken. An atmosphere should be created by all the political parties that this land of prayers should not stand into a land of honor killings," he added. The father-in-law of a Dalit boy, who was allegedly murdered by his upper-caste in-laws in Tirupur district, surrendered before the police on Monday.

A gang of unidentified men armed with hatchets and sickles rode into Udumalaipettai town and hacked the 22-year-old-boy in broad daylight. The boy was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

According to reports, the wife of the deceased belongs to a member of the dominant Thevar caste. She was with him at the time of the incident and was critically injured and admitted to the ICU later. The couple fell in love while studying at an engineering college in Palani and got married around eight months ago.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, Monday, wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to register India's objection to the harassment of Indian fisherman by Sri Lankan Navy.

The TN CM requested Prime Minister Modi to put in place a strong diplomatic response registering India’s disapproval of belligerent actions of Sri Lankan Navy.

She requested PM Modi to direct the Ministry of External Affairs to secure the immediate release of 96 Indian fishermen and 82 fishing boats. Jayalithaa added that Centre's inadequate response to incidents of apprehension and detention of Tamil Nadu fishermen has emboldened the Sri Lankan Navy.

The Tamil Nadu government's letter to the Centre comes two days after fishermen belonging to the coastal hamlets in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry threatened to boycott the May 16 Assembly polls if the Centre does not initiate steps for the release of fishermen arrested by Sri Lanka and also their boats before April 15.

Talking to reporters, Fishermen's Association President Rajendran said in 2015 alone, about 70 fishermen belonging to various parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have been arrested by Sri Lanka on the charge of fishing in the island nation's waters.He said about 90 fishing boats owned by the fishermen have also been seized by the Sri Lankan authorities last year.

The boats were valued between Rs. 5 lakh to 30 lakh each depending on its size, he said.

DSP BlackRock and Parinaam Foundation empower 4000 women in the lower income segment

Financial literacy workshops for women from 8 states across 24 locations in India to foster better saving and investment habits, open bank accounts and help make informed financial decisions

Chennai, March 14, 2016: DSP BlackRock Investment Managers Pvt. Ltd., one of the premier asset management companies in India, in association with Parinaam Foundation successfully conducted financial literacy workshops to benefit 4,000 women in the lower income segment, educate them about the importance of financial planning and introduce them to basics of financial services.  This was part of ‘Winvestor’ - DSP BlackRock’s investor education initiative to inspire and educate women with financial knowledge, enable them to plan for their financial future and make well-informed investment decisions.

The financial literacy workshops with Parinaam were structured as a five module in – classroom training program. The program is designed to empower women from low-income families across India with the knowledge and tools, impressing on them the importance of the need to save, reduce financial risk and make informed financial decisions. The beneficiaries were also made aware of financial services available to them such as budgeting, savings and credit management. The program was conducted in 8 states spread across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha.

Role play, video animations, flipcharts, and financial diaries which are pictorial and colorful were used as part of imparting financial knowledge, thus retaining the attention span of participants during training process. Calculators were provided to beneficiaries to teach basic numerical skills; Financial Diaries to help them track their income and expenses. Saving boxes were provided to every participant to inculcate saving habits for themselves and their children before they are able to open bank accounts.

At the completion of the program, 80% of beneficiaries now not only have savings accounts but have also started availing banking services like usage of ATM, withdrawal, deposits, among others. While 61% of beneficiaries now access cashless loan facilities, 73% beneficiaries availed higher ticket loans from MFI to develop business, improve their housing conditions and fund higher education for their children.

Three police officers are expected to survive gunshot wounds suffered in the chase of a suspect shot dead on Monday on Chicago's West side, the police department said.

The officers were investigating possible narcotics activity at about 9:40 p.m. when they encountered two suspects and chased one of them into a dark gangway between two buildings, the Chicago Police Department said.

"At some point, the offender fired shots at pursuing officers," it said in a statement. "At least one officer involved in the pursuit was able to return fire, fatally striking the offender."

One of the pursuing officers was shot in the back, another injured in the foot and a third shot in the chest area, possibly striking a bullet-proof vest, the Chicago Tribune reported, citing sources.

The officers were being treated for non-life threatening injuries at a nearby hospital, the police department said. "Tonight we were reminded of the dangers that our police face, and the bravery that they routinely display," the office of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in a statement.

The Officer Down Memorial Page shows that 2011 was the last time a Chicago police officer died in the line of duty.

Eight people were fatally shot and 22 wounded by Chicago police in 2015. In 2014, 37 people were shot and 16 people were killed by police gunfire in Chicago, the Tribune said.

The incident comes amid a U.S. Justice Department investigation into the department's use of force, including deadly force, following the death of a black teenager in a 2014 police shooting.

Police officer Jason Van Dyke was charged with first-degree murder in November, 13 months after having shot 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times, in an incident captured on a police squad car dashboard video.

The release of the video sparked protests and led to the firing of Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy in December. The city has yet to find a permanent replacement.
