He took over as the CEO of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in 1996 when the company’s revenues were at $ 155 million and since then led the company through some of its most exciting phases, including its going public in 2004. In October 2009, he retired as CEO, leaving a $ 6 billion global IT services company to his successor.

Mr. Ramadorai is currently the Chairman of AirAsia (India), Tata Advanced Systems Limited, Tata Technologies Limited. Recently, in March 2016, he retired as the Chairman of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE Limited) after having served for a period of 6 years on the board. He continues to be an Independent Director on the Boards of Hindustan Unilever Limited, Asian Paints Limited and Piramal Enterprises Limited.
On getting the award, Mr Ramadorai said that “I am honoured to receive this award of ‘Outstanding Institution builder’ and my sincere thanks to AIMA and the esteemed members of the jury for this award. “I firmly believe that institutions cannot be built by one person and therefore like to dedicate this award to all the TCS employees who have been instrumental in creating Asia’s largest software and consultancy firm and to my wife, Mala who stood by me always.”
Mr Ramadorai added, “There is no magic formula to create an outstanding institution, in fact it requires a rather focussed approach to strategic objectives, getting the right people on board, mentoring them, instilling a certain value system and staying close to the customer. I have always believed that an organisation is a large family and organisations that inspire this belief among its employees would be rewarded with the best of efforts, passion and commitment from them.”
