Fujifilm India Pvt Ltd Ties up with Sri Ramachandra University Chennai for the installation of Fujifilm’s 50 Micron 3D Mammography machine to enable early detection of breast cancer a reality for women
- Fujifilm’s advanced tomosynthesis technology reveals the internal structure of the breast thus simplifying the detection of lesions that gets overlooked in a routine mammography
Chennai, 22nd October, 2016: Fujifilm India Pvt Ltd, a leader in the development and application of imaging and information innovations to healthcare technologies and Sri Ramchandra University Chennai (SRMC), one of the largest hospitals in India, today, announced their tie up for the installation of Fujifilm’s state of the art Amulet Innovality - a highly advanced breast cancer diagnostic machine that has made early detection of breast cancer a reality for women.
The Amulet Innovality provides 50 Micron 3D image quality and advanced tomosynthesis technology that reveals the internal structure of the breast with a precision that enables the detection of those lesions that ordinarily get overlooked in a routine mammography.
According to a recent report by E & Y, more than 50% breast cancer patients are diagnosed too late. Lack of awareness of cancer and screening for disease are significant contributory factors for the relatively late stage of the disease presentation and consequently low reported cancer incidences in India. Less than 1% of women in India aged between 40 and 69 years participate in recommended breast screening mammograms once in 24 months, as compared to 30% in China and 65% in the US. These figures are certainly daunting and make Early Detection even more imperative.
Also, data from the National Cancer Registry programme shows that females in their 30s and 40s fall prone to the disease. Nearly 50% of the 144,937 women detected with the disease in 2012 succumbed to the disease, according to the Globocan project.
Commenting on the occasion Mr. Yasunobu Nishiyama, Managing Director Fujifilm India said, “It is a known fact that late diagnosis results in slimming the chances of survival. It is therefore vital for healthcare providers to step up and provide women the best early detection screening facilities that can help save lives. At Fujifilm, we are continuously innovating, creating new technologies, product and services and the AMULET INNOVALITY is one such product that has made early detection of breast cancer a reality for women all over the world.”
“The installation of the AMULET INNOVALITY at Sri Ramchandra University Chennai is another step for us in line with our commitment to raise awareness and promote early detection and treatment of breast cancer in India. We are grateful to our partner, Sri Ramchandra University for joining hands with us in this endeavor,” added Mr. Chander Shekhar Sibal, Executive Vice President & Head of Medical Division at Fujifilm India.
“We have always endeavoured to provide the very best technology at our facility and 3D Digital Mammography is another step in that direction. We expect it to be a game changer for early detection of breast cancer in Chennai.” said Prof.S. Anandan, Dean of the Medical College, Sri Ramachandra University Chennai.
Adding further, Prof. P.M. Venkata Sai, Head of Radiology & Imaging Sciences and Prof. Bhawna Dev at Sri Ramachandra University Chennai said, “We are very happy to be working on this technology that will put our facility on par with any world class breast imaging facility and will facilitate much more accurate diagnosis in detecting cancerous breast lesions at an early stage.”
The installation of the Amulet Innovality at Sri Ramchandra University will give the women of Chennai access to early detection of Breast Cancer. The Amulet Innovality uses advanced tomosynthesis technology to enable the conversion of digital breast images into a 3-D reconstruction of the breast, in contrast to the flat images produced by traditional 2-D digital mammography. Reconstructed tomographic images reveal the internal structure of the breast, simplifying the detection of lesions that may be overlooked in a routine mammography. Amulet Innovality enables diagnosticians to obtain a clearer view of the breast tissue, facilitating identification of early stage breast cancer and reducing the need for additional tests and biopsies.
Several features of Amulet Innovality offer women a safe and personalised screening experience, making it easier for them to come for breast examinations. This unique system caters to the unique biological makeup of every woman: The Intelligent Automatic Exposure Control (i-AEC) defines the optimum X ray dosage for each breast type, compared to conventional AEC where the sensor position is fixed. A Direct Conversion flat panel detector with a 50 micron pixel resolution, and other advanced technological features also give this system a distinct edge over others. 50 micron resolution is best resolution and it helps detects cancer at a very early stage.
Mammography is the most powerful breast cancer detection tool. Mammograms don't prevent breast cancer but they can save lives by finding breast cancers as early as possible. According to a report by WHO, Mammograms have been shown to reduce breast cancer mortality by around 20% in women by early detection.
Modern day digital mammography machine and tomosynthesis pick cancers early and involve only tiny radiation even less than a standard chest X ray. In future it is expected digital mammography will become more and more common. Most oncologists agree that breast screening mammography should start at the age of 40 and earlier in patients with high risks like genetic predisposition (BRCA 1 & BRCA 2 antigen positive) and those with strong family history.
* The system installed at SRMC Hospital has several features that set it apart from other digital mammography systems: Dual mode Tomosynthesis, HCP*, ISC**.
* A Direct conversion flat panel detector made of amorphous selenium, with 50 micron pixel resolution, and other advanced technological features that guarantee the sharpest images.
* Dual mode tomosynthesis- standard and high resolution enables the examination of fine tissue layers and assessment of clusters of calcification.
* A stereotactic biopsy unit kit with dedicated software enables a precise and efficient biopsy examination with detailed images on high resolution monitors display.
* Amulet Harmony incorporates a range of mammography solutions specifically designed to maintain a harmonious examination environment attune to every patient’s need. This includes:
# Fit sweet paddle – Unique paddle design to allow the pressure to be more evenly distributed across the breast as compared to standard and flexible paddles
# Mood Lightning
# Decorative Labels
* Hexagonal Close Pattern **Image Spectrum Conversion
