The Rotary Club of Madras East (RCME) today presented the prestigious “Dr. M.S. Swaminathan Award for Environment Protection 2017” to Dr. Maria Isabel Andrade, a renowned agricultural scientist from Mozambique, Africa & winner of The World Food Prize, 2016, The Award is presented to an individual, company or NGO which has contributed directly or indirectly, to heightening environmental protection and awareness, in any part of the World.
Dr. M. S. Swaminathan, ‘Indian Father of Green Revolution’, Rtn. R. Srinivasan, RI Dist. Governor, Dist 3232, Guest of Honour, were present along with Rtn B. S. Purshotham, President, RCME, Rtn. C. K. Ranganathan, CMD, Cavinkare Pvt. Ltd. & Mr. S. Abhaya Kumar Jain, Industrialist & Social Educationalist.
Rtn B. S. Purshotham, President, RCME said, “This Award is to recognize Dr. Maria Andrade’s significant contribution as an Agronomist for well over three decades. Her dedication and hard work has made the development of root and tuber crop in Africa impacting millions of farmers. Dr. Maria Andrade has provided leadership to the Mozambican national root crops program and created a seminal impact in identifying, developing and implementing research and development projects.”
He added, “Her work at the Sweet Potato Action for Security and Health in Africa (SASHA) Southern Platform bringing together sweet potato breeders from various African countries had served to heighten visibility and impact in Sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. Maria Isabel Andrade’s contribution has been globally recognized through the conferment of the 2016 World Food Prize among several awards.”
