Chennai, June 21, 2017: Bayer India has selected three young delegates to participate in the third edition of the global Youth Ag-Summit to be held from October 9-13, 2017 in Brussels, Belgium. Apoorva Valli Shankar, a 25-year old educator from Chennai is one of the delegates chosen to represent India at the summit.

The Youth Ag-Summit is a platform that provides young leaders the opportunity to share their ideas, best practices and explore the role of modern agriculture in feeding a hungry planet. Bayer, together with its partners: Groene Kring (GK) and Fédération des Jeunes Agriculteurs (FJA) is organizing the summit.

To participate, prospective delegates were asked to submit an essay of 1,500 words on the topic of food insecurity. The goal was to address the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of ending hunger, achieving food security and promoting sustainable agriculture. More than 100 essays were received from all corners of India and reviewed by a panel of experts.

Apoorva, whose essay focused on solutions that involve women to end the world hunger crisis, shared her excitement at being selected. "India faces malnutrition on an unimaginable scale. At the Youth Ag-Summit, I want to expand my awareness about food security and meet other delegates who share a similar vision. Being a teacher, I look forward to gaining a lot of valuable insights which I can share with my students and fellow teachers. I also look forward to using my learnings to mobilise my community to take action." Apoorva is a teacher at an international school in Chennai, where she teaches English to Primary and Secondary school students.

During the summit, the delegates will share their diverse experiences and work together to generate innovative, sustainable and actionable solutions to solve global food security challenges. Across five days, the delegates will undertake group projects and participate in industry tours, as well as learn from expert guest speakers. The end-objective is to enable the delegates to come up with new ideas that can drive agricultural progress across the globe and also be put into practice in their local communities.
