Fourth International Management Development Programme (FIMDP) – March 2017 Conference on “Challenges In The Management Of Lifestyle Diseases” Jointly Organized by Department of Community Medicine & Cardiology, SRM MCH & RC School Of Public Health and Community Medicine UNSW, Australia

The Department of Community Medicine, SRM Medical College Hospital & Research centre, Kattankulathur hosted a Conference on “Challenges in the Management of Lifestyle Diseases” in joint collaboration with School of Public Health and Community Medicine, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia on 31st March & 1st April, 2017.

The conference focused on the Global burden, Epidemiology, changing trends over time & current status of Non-Communicable Diseases which are related to the change in our lifestyle such as Diabetes, Hypertension, Cancer, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke.

Dr A. Ramachandran, one of the country’s renowned Diabetologist, in his Inaugural address, said that Indians are more vulnerable to diabetes by having a high genetic predisposition and that the urban-rural divide in the prevalence of diabetes has now become indistinguishable. Dr Prakash Subburayan, Executive Director, Star Health Insurance stressed the need for Universal Health Insurance to address the rising economic burden in managing Lifestyle Diseases.

Dr P. Thangaraju, Pro-vice Chancellor (Medical), SRM University was instrumental in collaborating with UNSW, Australia and said that the MoU was extended for the next five years to work on the Collaborative Research on Lifestyle Diseases. Professor Richard Taylor, a pioneer in Research in Lifestyle Diseases represented UNSW, Australia, enlightened the audience on Global diversity of Non Communicable Diseases.

Around 250 delegates from 48 medical colleges in South India attended this two day event and about 130 research papers were presented on the sidelines of the conference. Also, a Health Exhibition on Prevention of Lifestyle Diseases was conducted in the SRM Hospital premises by the students of SRM Medical College for the benefit of patients and general public. Dr A Sundaram, Dean, SRM Medical College welcomed delegates and Dr Logaraj gave the vote of thanks.
