CHENNAI: In an early morning crackdown, the Chennai City Police tried to evict the pro-jallikattu protesters at Marina beach, which has witnessed protests for the last six days. Sources said that all the roads leading to the beach have been blocked.
In a statement released during the early hours of the day, the authorities requested the "participants to leave the Marina in the same peaceful and disciplined manner."
The police action comes a day after the state government organised Jallikattu in several places following the promulgation of an ordinance enabling the same.
Not satisfied with that, the protesters demanded a “permanent” solution, that is, amendment to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act by the central government taking out bulls from the list of performing animals.
The government on Sunday announced that all colleges and schools will resume functioning from Monday even as negotiations continued with the protesters across the State.
