HYDERABAD: A 64-year-old retired employee died while standing in the queue at a bank to deposit his demonetised notes. Lakshmi Narayana collapsed soon after climbing the second step and became unconscious. A head constable, with the support of the fellow customers, massaged him in order to comfort him before calling the ambulance.
“The ambulance took 15 minutes to come. But, by the time, people started shifting him to the nearby private hospital in an auto. On the way, he was moved into the ambulance”, said the Marredpally police adding that the hospital declared Lakshmi Narayan him dead on arrival.
According to the fellow customers, Lakshmi Narayana arrived at the bank at 9:40 am and collapsed within 15 minutes.
“There were three long queues. One was of women and the two other male queues were for deposits and exchange of the notes”, said the customers.
Lakshmi Narayana, who retired from the panchayat raj department, returned from his native Anantapur district the very morning. He was staying at his second daughter’s residence ever since his wife had died some five years ago.
“He came here only to deposit the money in the bank. He took Rs 1.5 lakh. He also wanted to withdraw Rs 24,000 as permitted by the RBI”, said his family members.
