CHENNAI: With Prime Minister demonetizing Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes, the aftershocks have been felt across different sectors and not surprisingly, the races which were scheduled at the Madras Race Club on Wednesday have been cancelled.
"Chennai races scheduled for November 9 will not be held. MRC will also not be operating off-course betting over Kolkata races on Wednesday," said an MRC official.
"We welcome this decision, it could have been carried out in different phases so that the common man does not feel the pinch. With regards to betting, majority of betting happens via cash and the decision to do away with Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denominations have hit us hard," said the punter.
His fellow punter sound more optimistic. "While there will be personal inconveniences such as these, the situation will be under control in a couple of days with the issuing of new notes and we shall be back," he enthused.
