TIRUVANNAMALAI: Police on Thursday picked up a librarian of a private engineering college in Tiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu in connection with the suicide of a student.

The deceased has been identified as S Lokesh, a native of Vaniyambadi and a third-year computer science student at Arunai College of Engineering.

Lokesh allegedly committed suicide in his college hostel room after 3.30pm on Wednesday when his roommates went out.

The hostel warden found the body hanging from the ceiling of the room at 4pm and alerted the Veraiyur police.

Veraiyur police inspector said the librarian, Arokia Selvam, had abused the student for not returning a book. The librarian refused to issue a no-objection certificate (NOC) to him. The NOC was mandatory for appearing for the semester examinations.

"The student would not be allowed to attend the semester examination without obtaining an NOC from the librarian. He misplaced a book he had borrowed from the library. So, the librarian refused to issue an NOC," said police.

The police registered a case based on a complaint filed by the father of the student. They picked up Arokia Selvam for questioning.
