Free health checkup camp for visually impaired conducted in Chandigarh
Paras Bliss Hospital, Panchkula conducts free health checkup camp for visually impaired in Chandigarh
* Regular health checkup in India is abysmally low and the condition is worse with visually impaired people
* Visually impaired are at higher risk for health problems than people without any disability or deformity
Panchkula, 26 April 2016: Regular health checkups are important to keep diseases and health issues at bay. While regular screenings can prevent occurrence of any diseases, they also help in early diagnosis and important for people with deformity or disability. However, in India, rate of regular health check up is abysmally low and situation worsens when it comes to people with physical or mental impairment.
Taking the gap into account, Paras Bliss Hospital for Mother & Child, Panchkula conducted a four hour long free health checkup camp at a Blind school in Chandigarh to draw the attention of visually impaired people towards their own health issues and to educate them about the need of maintaining overall health. The team of experts and doctors comprising of Dr. Harpreet Kaur Isher, Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dr. Akshay Mehta, Consultant, Neonatology, Dr. Alpi Behl, Sr. Consultant, Dental and Dr. Neha Gill Consultant, Physiotherapist, Paras Bliss Hospital, Panchkula also educated the masses about the importance of health, ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle and methods to prevent various diseases.
Disability of any kind affects the lifestyle and mentality. Likewise, visual impairment too tends to depreciate the quality and productivity of life. In most of the cases, visual impairment also effects other sensory, motor, or learning impairments with or without chronic disease. Hence, visually impaired people have higher risk for health problems when compared with people without the disability.
“India is very negligent about the concept of regular health checkups. While lack of awareness about the importance of routine checkups is one of prime reasons for low rate of routine health checkup, cost attached to the screenings and diagnoses discourage many people to follow the concept. The condition is bad when it comes to people with disability. In case of visual impairment, the disability further tends to effects other senses as well that further decreases the quality of life. Hence, the organized free camp is aimed to primarily benefit the visually impaired people by providing with effective consultation and support for all general heath related issues such as Paediatrics, Gynaecology, Dental and Physiotherapy,” said Dr Rishi Mangat, Centre Head, Paras Bliss Hospital.
Starting at 9 am, the camp attracted 100 visually impaired participants from all age groups who gained knowledge about the importance of health and risk of diseases they are likely to be prone of. The camp helped people shun away their myths and misconception regarding modern healthcare and encouraged them to follow a healthy lifestyle to improve their eye health as well.

How Two Entrepreneurs are Solving Water Problem In Maharashtra
Maharashtra, India, April 27, 2016: The blazing anger of heat has scorched the western areas of the country. With 10 major states, like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana, being declared as drought-stricken, the whole nation is under the blanket of fear.
Water availability in India is rapidly reaching to the point of scarcity, with low rainfalls being recorded each year. It would not be just to blame the severe climate change for it. The failure of government taking lucrative steps towards the inevitable calamities has played enough part too.
Farmers whose lives closely depend on water availability are the worst hit. Farmers of Maharashtra, who mainly grow water-intensive crops like sugarcane and cotton, say that the current situation is worse than the drought that hit the State in 1972.
The lives of these farmers are stretched to the maximum degree, causing many to succumb to insurmountable pressures. More than 1,100 farmers committed suicide last year in the Marathwada region alone. This number, with the State suffering from the worst drought in decades, is unfortunately expected to go up this year.
Besides massive government support, the only hope left for the situation to improve is the prediction report of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) to come true. According to the report, there is a 30-percent chance that the monsoon this year will be in excess, while there is a 34-percent probability of an above-average monsoon. The IMD predicted that weather conditions indicate a 30-percent possibility of a normal monsoon this year.
Faced by such unchallenged laws of nature, here is some news that should fill us all with some hope for the coming times. Over 7,000 students and staff members from different schools in Pune have been contributing their leftover water back to their schools for watering plants and cleaning toilets, tasks that were earlier done using fresh water. Many more children are gradually joining the cause.
The two young men behind the mission are Vedant Goel and Yusuf Soni. They had earlier organised a camp where more than 1,011 students brushed their teeth together and took in important lessons on cleanliness. Vedant received a Limca Book Record for this feat. Now, the duo is organising water camps at several schools in the city. Vedant says,
"Our aim is to reach 10,000 children. We have already reached 7,000. Our campaign aims to educate kids about the importance of water and also make sustainable use of the available resources. The simple idea of collecting leftover water in a drum at the end of the day will not only provide an alternative way for water conservation but also help kids understand the concept of sustainable development and use of alternatives. Now, the schools are closed for summer vacations. We’re sure that the message is spreading rapidly. Children are contributing in an initiative lucrative for the future, so localities, parents, and societies are aware of its importance too.”
“We have no problem, whatsoever, with merging with other NGO’s,” Vedant said, when asked if he would like to connect with other like-minded organizations. “We have also talked to a few organizations regarding our idea, and have asked them to take this initiative forward on individual levels.”
"We want to do this forever. Now the schools have closed for summer vacations. We are sure these children are spreading their message to their families and in their localities. Water is a long-term problem. If further damage has to be curbed, educating children can really go a long way." Vedant Added.
Vedant and Yusuf visit these schools every Saturday and teach children the importance of water. While grateful to the administration of those schools that are already supporting their work, they wish more schools can join the mission. Yusuf concludes.
Many initiatives are being taken to improve the condition of Maharashtra, and we can only hope to see it rising combating all the calamities it is facing.

Columbia Asia Hospital, Ahmedabad revives life of 52-year-old
In a rare event, 52-year-old, apparently dead was revived at Columbia Asia Hospital, Ahmedabad
* The patient collapsed after suffering from sudden cardiac arrest in which his heart functioning completely stopped
Ahmedabad, 22 April 2016: In a rare medical success, doctors at Columbia Asia Hospital, Ahmedabad successfully revived a 52 year-old man who was brought to the hospital after being pulseless and comatose for 30 to 40 minutes at home.
When 52-year-old Parag Dave suddenly collapsed at home, his anxious family called the emergency of Columbia Asia Hospital for the ambulance service. The ER consultant, Dr Bhavesh Patel rushed immediately to bring the patient to the hospital. Diagnosing the situation, Dr. Bhavesh Patel realized that it was a case of cardio respiratory arrest and informed the hospital’s emergency department of the patient’s condition and the preparedness that was needed. He started emergency treatment on site and immediately transferred the patient to the Emergency Room (ER) of Columbia Asia Hospital, Ahmedabad with an ongoing CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) enroute.
At the hospital, along with Dr Bhavesh Shah- Intensivist the revival continued for 30 minutes after which the patient’s heart began to beat again.
It is very rare that a patient is successfully revived after over 30 minutes of his heart completely stopping.
“Parag had suffered from complete cardiac respiratory arrest which occurs when the heart stops functioning. The condition further affects the flow of blood to the brain and other vital organs, resulting in death. The brain is the most vulnerable organ and lack of blood supply to the brain for even less than a minute carries potential risk of causing brain damage. The condition is very critical and demands urgent and careful intervention to ensure revival. When brought to the ER of the hospital, we continued with CPR for 30 minutes, following which his heart revived and started pumping soon after,” said Dr Bhavesh Shah, Consultant, Intensivist, Columbia Asia Hospital, Ahmedabad.
In the ICU, Parag underwent other tests such as MRI Brain, ECG and brain mapping and the reports suggested minimal neurological damage. This was primarily due to the quick and continued efforts of revival of the team
In India, owing to the lack of awareness and access to necessary facilities, rate of patients surviving cardiac arrest is less than 1%. Notably, there is no definite data recorded in India to quote the actual figures. However, the survival rate remains to be abysmally low.
“Sudden Cardiac arrest is a highly fatal condition. Unlike heart attack where the heart takes times to stop beating, a cardiac arrest is a sudden event. The condition has the potential to cause death within few minutes. Considering the complications of the condition, we consider Parag’s revival as a unique achievement. The credit goes to the efficient team of hospital who were vigilant and prompt enough to utilize each second to make the revival possible,” added Dr Shah.
Parag was discharged after 4 weeks of intensive treatment. During his stay in the hospital, the doctor and his team efficiently monitored every detail of his condition and recovery to provide services and care accordingly. Ass a result, the patient is now recovering and is capable of talking and walking slowly. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation with the aim of ensuring complete recovery.
