In Pic: Dr. H. V. Hande, Former Health Minister, Tamil Nadu (left) is seen along with Dr. Arulmozhi Varman, Ophthalmic Surgeon & Medical Director and Mrs. Uma Varman, Admin Director, Uma Eye Clinic during the formal inauguration of CATALYS.

First Time in Tamil Nadu

CATALYS, Robotic Laser Cataract Surgery System, the most advanced system currently in the world was  launched recently at Uma Eye Clinic, Annanagar by Dr HV Hande, Former Health Minister, Tamil Nadu.  The Robotic surgery provides better precision and accuracy. The technology is being introduced for the first time in Tamil Nadu.

Dr. Arulmozhi Verman, Ophthalmic Surgeon, Uma Eye Clinic said, “It is a robotic surgery using laser. The existing cataract surgery procedure involves a human hand precision of 1 mm to 2 mm. With CATALYS, the precision goes up to 1 to 2 microns. It guarantees a significant degree of accuracy over the other procedure and it is beyond what a human hand can do. It also reduces the effects of ultrasound probe which is used to break up the lens for removal. It gives better and faster results,” he says.

He further added that CATALYS would increase the cost of the procedure by Rs 50,000 to Rs 65,000. A cataract surgery for one eye can cost up to Rs 70,000 depending on the lens.  There are conventional surgery procedures and Femto second Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS) procedure options available. There are currently four companies offering the technology, however, the American one is considered to be the best among them.

Cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye leading to a decrease in vision. A person can develop cataract in one or both eyes. Often it develops slowly and sometimes over years. Cataracts are the cause of half of blindness and 33 percent of visual impairment worldwide. Cataract symptoms include clouded, blurred or dim vision, increasing difficulty in vision at night, sensitivity to light and glare, seeing halos around lights, frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescription, fading or yellowing of colours, double vision in a single eye.

International Women’s Day quote, Ms. Preetha Reddy, Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Group

Speaking on the occasion of International Women’s Day, Ms. Preetha Reddy, Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Group said, “The International Women's Day has always played an important role in dispelling myths. We have used the platform to shatter baseless untruths like women are not strong, women are less suited to high pressure jobs or that women prefer to be dependent on others. The time has come to shatter some new myths; these are myths about women's health and they are very dangerous untruths.

Heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and cancer are not men's diseases. The fact of matter is that they are just as likely to affect women as men. Lifestyle diseases do not discriminate by sex, they attack whenever indiscipline and sedentary lifestyles leave a chink in the armor - for both men and women. Emancipation, opportunity and recognition, all lose their sheen when health falters. So, get active, exercise regularly, eat right, and make time for health checks. It will transform your life.”

“Women's Day is not about honouring women achievers. It's about honoring the role of women - in the home and in the workforce. This year, the theme of Women's Day is parity - equality of gender, opportunity and dignity. I was fortunate that my father never treated us as girls- we were his children. He didn't give us concessions for being women, instead gave us the opportunity to serve as part of the Apollo workforce.

It’s unfortunate that in many parts of the world, discrimination and inequities persist and it is these aspects that prevent nations from realizing the potential of an equitable, peaceful, prosperous world. If we walk the talk on taking a pledge for parity, and take the bold steps to better the lives of women, we will be taking bold steps to better the lives of families and future generations.”

India to get first batch of female fighter pilots

New Delhi: With the globe marking International Women's Day today, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha announced that the nation will see its first batch of female fighter pilots on June 18th this year.

"As of now three women trainees have volunteered to join the fighter stream. They are under the second phase of their training. Once they complete their training and are at par with their male colleagues and the passing out parade is scheduled on June 18th," Raha told.

Asserting that all the three trainees should get commissioned on that day and become the first women officers in the fighter stream, Raha added that subsequently they will go to the advanced jet training, and later proceed to the regular squads.

"I must thank the Defence Minister for having approved IAF's proposal to induct women as fighter pilots and very soon on 18th June this year, Indian Air Force will get its first woman fighter pilot," Raha said at a seminar on women in uniform in the Army Medical Corps here.

He asserted that it was the AMC who first provided the opportunity to women to serve in the defence after which, the floodgates have opened for women to prove their mettle.

However in March last year, Raha had said that women are physically not suited to fly fighter planes. "As far as flying fighter planes is concerned, it is a very challenging job. Women are by nature not physically suited for flying fighter planes for long hours, especially when they are pregnant or have other health problems," he had said.

Later he changed his stand saying that he had "no doubt" that women could become fighter pilots.

International Women’s Day: When beauty is more than skin deep

Having a greater control over their looks has empowered a lot of women, and leading the charge to ‘empower through beauty’ are dynamic women aesthetic physicians in India

Ayesha, 28 was always troubled by the deep acne scars on her face that had been there since teenage. No matter how well she used concealers and other make up tools, there was no hiding them. With people often enquiring about the cause of these scars, not just this affected her appearance but also her self esteem tremendously.

Established in her profession and earning well, Ayesha decided to take greater control over her body and met an aesthetic physician. A few session with skin lasers, and her scars are now only marginally visible. Ayesha hasn’t been happier and has never felt more confident.

For the new age bold and confident girls like Ayesha, life is to be lived on their own terms and cosmetic procedures are just one resource that offer this sense of empowerment.

Whether we like to believe it or not, beauty is a desirable thing. Who doesn’t want to look beautiful? Yet, there has always been this lingering belief that there is something wrong in taking a cosmetologist’s help in improving our appearance.

“For a lot of women, a greater control over their bodies and appearance is a boon. For a woman who hosts guest travelers all the time as an air hostess, it is of utmost importance to have a good appearance. Not only to enter the profession, but also to remain in it. Same is true for women in showbiz or women who have roles in front of the camera such as actors and news anchors. For all such women, cosmetic procedures are really helpful. Even women outside such professions today are actively seeking options to improve their appearance, and there should be absolutely nothing wrong with it,” says Dr Chiranjiv Chhabra, leading aesthetic physician and founder, SkinAlive Clinics.

For women in such careers and fields, cosmetic procedures are a way to keep themselves fighting fit, much like fitness training is for athletes. Today, an increasing number of women are taking recourse to cosmetic treatments, both surgical ad non invasive, to achieve some of their dreams. In this sense, having a greater control over their appearance makes them empowered.

“More popular though are non-invasive treatments like Botox, fillers, lasers, medi-facials, oxygen and vitamin infusion therapies etc that are quick and do not carry the need of going under the knife. Facial contouring to redefine features is another popular aspect of facial aesthetics today and a number of women like to get their lips augmented, their cheeks highlighted and their chins redefined. Procedures to do away with scars, pigmentation an acne marks are among the most popular,” adds Dr Chhabra.

If we talk about the field of dermato cosmetology, the leading names that prop up in our minds in India are invariably all women. Studying medicine, but decisively choosing aesthetic medicine as their careers, women have literally overrun this field.

Of course, there has to be a difference between undergoing cosmetic procedures and becoming obsessed with them. The latter is not recommended and doctors always advice clients to be realistic in their expectations and not become dependent on cosmetic procedures.

With increase in purchasing power and greater exposure to the entertainment industry, the awareness and demand has grown in the cosmetic industry. Modern day cosmetic treatments have changed the lives of many women.

New solution significantly strengthens and simplifies ‘Know Your Customer’ processes

Chennai(India)March 9, 2016: Intellect Design Arena Limited’s iGTB division, the world’s first comprehensive global transaction banking solution, announced today its partnership with OutsideIQ, the cognitive computing technology company, to deliver DDIQ:  the most advanced due diligence screening tool for compliance.

OutsideIQ’s DDIQ system has been designed to simultaneously strengthen and simplify the otherwise expensive, time-consuming and labour-intensive process of due diligence,” said Dan Adamson, CEO of OutsideIQ. “Capable of producing complete profiles of corporations and individual subjects in mere minutes, the solution combines the speed and efficiency of automated data discovery with the data interpretation skills of a human researcher.

DDIQ:

* Incorporates cognitive computing and natural-language processing to create an adverse media search that is contextual and subject aware

* Addresses the challenge of false positives while simultaneously reducing the cost and time burdens associated with manually searched information

* Conducts the most comprehensive search available, with underlying sources ranging from regulatory databases and watch-lists to sanctions lists, politically-exposed person (PEP) lists, legal databases, the open web and premium structured content

* Flags potential high-risk suspects with discovered adverse media before that person or entity appears on official watch-lists

* Prepares auditable reports that can be re-run on a periodic basis without the need to re-assess previously reported data

* Significantly enhances KYC and due-diligence capabilities while allowing compliance professionals to focus their time elsewhere

DDIQ’s ability to combine automation with humanlike interpretation is a godsend for banks, and in turn the security and stability of the underlying economy.  Due diligence can no longer be restricted to conventional watch-lists, and must include unstructured sources, such as  open and deep web searches, to accurately identify high-risk clients,” said Manish Maakan, CEO, iGTB. “This presents banks with a huge challenge, as the manpower required to understand and assess such information is truly enormous, yet the punishment for not doing so is even more significant.  This partnership between Intellect and OutsideIQ will help solve this challenge.”

With the cost of breaking sanctions estimated at US$12 billion, financial institutions have been caught between the physical impossibility of manually tracking adverse-media results, and the limitations, false positives and out-of-context “noise” of automated due diligence. In 2014, one large bank spent nearly US$1 billion on managing regulatory requirements, while another has added 5,000 people to its compliance team over the last three years, in the wake of a US$1.9 billion fine for not following AML reporting and prevention regulations.

Intellect has a rich portfolio of risk management solutions, which includes Client Onboarding, Origination, Enterprise Limits, AML Transaction Monitoring and Exception Management. DDIQ technology can be integrated with Intellect’s solutions to deliver an enhanced transaction banking experience. iGTB, the global transaction banking arm of Intellect, will  leverage its expertise in Liquidity, Supply Chain & Trade, Payments & Cash Management and Commercial Risk to deliver an advanced screening solution in collaboration with OutsideIQ.

CA Technologies Named as a 2016 World's Most Ethical Company by the Ethisphere Institute

Mumbai – March 9, 2016– CA Technologies (NASDAQ: CA), has been recognized by the Ethisphere Institute, a global leader in defining and advancing the standards of ethical business practices, as a 2016 World’s Most Ethical Company®.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of Ethisphere and the World’s Most Ethical Companies designation which recognizes those companies who align principle with action, work tirelessly to make trust part of their corporate DNA, and in doing so, shape future industry standards by introducing tomorrow’s best practices today.

As a first time winner and one of only three in the Software and Services category, this achievement underscores CA Technologies commitment to leading ethical business standards and practices.

“We are proud to be included on this year’s list of the World’s Most Ethical Companies,” said Joel Katz, Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer, CA Technologies.  “Our company has worked hard to build a strong, ethical culture – one where employees understand that meeting our obligation as an ethical corporate citizen is every bit as important as meeting our financial goals.  We live in a world where customers understandably want to conduct business with companies that they trust, and CA believes that by placing a high value on ethics and compliance, it is better positioned to build strong, lasting relationships with customers.”

"Companies rely on Ethisphere to continually raise and measure the standards of corporate behavior. Those that demonstrate leadership in areas like citizenship, integrity and transparency create more value for their investors, communities, customers and employees, thus solidifying a sustainable business advantage," explained Ethisphere’s Chief Executive Officer, Timothy Erblich. "Congratulations to CA Technologies for being recognized as a World's Most Ethical Company."

Methodology & Scoring

The World's Most Ethical Company assessment is based upon the Ethisphere Institute’s Ethics

Quotient™ (EQ) framework developed over years of research and vetted and refined by the expert advice from Ethisphere’s World’s Most Ethical Company Methodology Advisory Panel. The EQ offers a quantitative way to assess a company’s performance in an objective, consistent and standardized way. The information collected provides a comprehensive sampling of definitive criteria of core competencies, rather than all aspects of corporate governance, risk, sustainability, compliance and ethics.

Scores are generated in five key categories: ethics and compliance program (35%), corporate citizenship and responsibility (20%), culture of ethics (20%), governance (15%) and leadership, innovation and reputation (10%) and provided to all companies who participate in the process.

OpManager Plus Unites Five Network Management Solutions in One App, One Console

* EXE-level integration of network performance monitoring, server monitoring, traffic analytics, firewall security management, user tracking

* #DoITAll - one console for total network visibility, real-time fault fixes, reduced MTTR

CHENNAI (India) - March 9, 2016ManageEngine, the real-time IT management company, today announced the launch of OpManager Plus, the latest edition of its network management platform. OpManager Plus sets a new standard for unified IT monitoring with the industry's first EXE-level integration of five network management functions.

With OpManager Plus, users get one application for NetFlow monitoring, configuration management, firewall log analysis and compliance, IP address management, and switch port management. The single OpManager Plus console provides in-depth visibility and control of all aspects of network management for faster troubleshooting.

Most vendors offer disparate tools for various aspects of network management such as bandwidth management, firewall log analysis, configuration management and more. Though these tools can integrate with one another, they do not provide a holistic view and, therefore, make admins juggle between multiple tabs. Maintenance of all these different tools is also hectic because they require separate backups, service packs and licenses.

"IT administrators hate using multiple products as they are expensive and difficult to maintain," said Dev Anand, Director of Product Management at ManageEngine. "The integration provided by OpManager Plus makes network management simpler and smarter and helps IT teams do everything from a single console. Integrated modules with a common database allow further data integration, helping admins find missing data and mitigate network issues in real time. As the new OpManager Plus is just one piece of software, maintenance tasks such as upgrades and backups are easier than ever."

The All-in-One Advantage

OpManager Plus is the first network management solution to provide a single application - a single EXE - that integrates five different network management modules and the data those modules generate. In turn, the router performance snapshot page, for instance, now includes flow-based traffic and configuration management data, which helps admins decide whether the issue is because of the bandwidth or the recent configuration change, without switching tabs.

The data integration also extends to dashboards and business views. Dashboards now show real-time bandwidth utilization, recent completed configuration changes, compliance violations and much more. Business views now also add flow-based traffic data combined with the health status of the devices and links.

The single product, single console design of OpManager Plus increases IT teams' visibility and control over their network and enables real-time troubleshooting. OpManager Plus includes the following network management modules:

* NetFlow monitoring module- provides visibility into network traffic by analyzing NetFlow, sFlow, jFlow, IP FIX and other flows. It identifies top bandwidth consumers by device, application and user.

* Firewall management module- collects, archives and analyzes all firewall logs for auditing and compliance. It tracks user activities and bandwidth consumption and triggers alerts to admins if blocked sites are accessed.

* Configuration management module- backs up, restores, pushes and reverts configurations on network devices, with no device login required. It issues notifications via email and SMS for unauthorized configuration changes.

* IP address management module- manages IPv4 and IPv6 addresses for free space and availability. It tracks the entire history of an IP address, including the devices to which it was allocated.

In addition to its all-in-one design, OpManager Plus features end-user-centric bandwidth analysis. This feature is released as a beta version and lets admins track all personally-owned devices (BYOD) that end users connect to the office network. Admins can also monitor the app-related bandwidth consumed by those devices. This provides increased granular visibility into employee bandwidth consumption.

Another feature of OpManager Plus is simplified upgrades and maintenance. With all network modules integrated within a single application, OpManager Plus streamlines maintenance activities. Tasks such as backup, upgrade and licensing need to be performed one time, for one application, rather than several times, for several modules.

OpManager Plus introduces the latest generation of the Fluidic user interface. Along with its snapshot pages, dashboards and business views, the new UI further improves usability with common settings, search, inventory, alarms and reports across all OpManager Plus modules.

Srinagar: The local weather department on Thursday forecast heavy rains in plains and snowfall in higher reaches of Kashmir Valley during the next three days. The forecast has triggered panic as heavy rains last year in March had swollen most water bodies in the Valley causing widespread water logging in Srinagar.

"Valley has always witnessed maximum precipitation in the month of March," Sonam Lotus, director of the local MET office said here. "There is nothing alarming about the forecast. We are expecting rains during the next three days beginning Friday and these could be heavy at some places."

"Higher reaches especially in the PirPanchal mountain range is likely to witness more snowfall during this period as compared to northern areas of the Valley," the director added. "There is no warning, but people living in areas prone to landslides and flash floods need to remain vigilant."

Jammu and Kashmir has been witnessing unusually high late winter temperatures which have resulted in early blooming of flowers and fruit trees. The maximum temperature rose to 20.4 degrees Celsius on February 24 in Srinagar. Such rise in day temperature was witnessed after 76 years.

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka's navy said Tuesday it has detained 32 Indian fishermen who were fishing illegally in Sri Lankan territorial waters less than two months after the two countries agreed to work together to combat poaching. The fishermen were detained off Sri Lanka's northern coast on Monday and were handed over to the fisheries department for legal action, the navy said in a statement.

It said the fishermen "were poaching well within Sri Lanka's territorial waters despite the recent talks held between the two neighboring countries to refrain from illegal methods of fishing and restrict fishing to own waters."

In January, fisheries ministers from the two nations held talks in New Delhi on the release of detained fishermen and long-term measures to prevent unlawful fishing in each side's waters. As a result of the talks, 283 Indian and 181 Sri Lankan fishermen who were held in the two countries were released.

Despite the meeting, poaching has continued and both sides have arrested more fishermen accused of illegal fishing.

Sri Lankan authorities have now detained 148 Indian fishermen and India has detained 25 Sri Lankans since the January talks, Fisheries Ministry spokesman Narendra Rajapakse said.
