Mumbai: The Mumbai Fire Brigade on Wednesday submitted an investigation report on a fire which occurred during the 'Make in India' programme last week to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), in which it has accused the organizers of the event of 'gross negligence'.

The report states that short-circuit was the root cause of the fire. The presence of inflammable adhesives and an LPG cylinder near the stage helped the fire to assume mammoth proportions.

The fire department has slammed the organizers for keeping inflammable substances near the stage. Pratap Rahangdale, Chief Fire Officer of Mumbai Fire Brigade, said that report was prepared by analyzing accounts of several witnesses and circumstantial evidence.

"We have opened the report for the public. We studied circumstantial evidence and witness accounts. I was also one of the witnesses, as I was the first one to use extinguisher there. By studying all that we arrived at the chain of events leading to fire and prepared a final report," he told ANI.

In its 185-page report uploaded on the website of the BMC, the Fire Brigade, has also said that repeated instructions on fire safety were ignored in the run-up to the event. Fire department has also sent some samples from the site for testing in the Central Forensic Science Laboratory.

On February 14, a major fire broke out at the stage of Cultural programme of ' Make in India' here at the Girgaum Chowpatty in Mumbai. The entire stage set up for the programme was destroyed due to the fire. All the celebrities and dignitaries were safely taken out from the venue.

According to eye witnesses a dance performance was going on and suddenly the stage was engulfed by a massive fire. Shiv Sena chief Udhav Thackeray, Bollywood actors Amitabh Bachchan, Amir Khan, Hema Malini, Vivek Oberoi and others were present when the incident took place.

Mumbai: Former Indian captain Kris Srikkanth feels Test skipper Virat Kohli will turn out to be one of the best leaders ever for the cricket team, given his "adaptability skills".

"Adaptability skills which Virat has are fantastic. You see Virat Kohli's game approach, he adapts beautifully in all the three formats. As a cricketer if you want to be a complete cricketer, you need adaptability skills and that is what cricket teaches you," Srikkanth said at a programme organised by Right Management last evening.

The former chairman of selectors also appreciated Kohli for his "never-give up attitude". "He does not give up and fights from the front. That is Virat's style." Srikkanth, a member of the 1983 World Cup -winning squad, also looked back at the glorious days and praised Kapil Dev's leadership.

"Kapil Dev was different, (Sunil) Gavaskar's approach as a captain, was first perfection and then go for a win, but Kapil Dev's approach was different, both (were) positive," he said.

"He was one guy whose attitude was, who are these West Indians, who are these fast bowlers, who are these guys... and that attitude helped us win the World Cup in 1983," he said. "If one man was responsible for winning the 1983 World Cup it was Kapil Dev, he led from the front," he added.

Gartner Recognizes i-exceed as an MADP Provider and Key Vendor in Adjacent Markets

Chennai – February 25, 2016: The year 2016 has started off on a good note with i-exceed’s Appzillon being recognized as one of the MADP providers and key vendors in adjacent market in Gartner’s global MADP report for 2016.

With demand for mobile apps outweighing internal IT team’s delivery capacities by a large margin, RMADs are quickly gaining prominence as swift enablers of digital initiatives for an enterprise. Gartner recommends that enterprises ought to:

1. Adopt a bimodal approach to mobile app development to capture digital opportunities in an agile manner, while also setting up and maintaining a solid back-end infrastructure to support scalability.

2. Focus enterprise IT on the integration layer and production of APIs. The front-end mobile app development should be shared with lines of business (LOBs) as well as third parties that have expertise in UX and user interface development efforts.

The report also highlights that usability is an important factor, if not the most important one, for the success of all mobile apps. For such use cases, customers prefer MADPs and RMADs that enable rich content creation and engaging experiences.

However, no two organizations have the same approach to mobile app development, nor the same feature requirements or priorities, so selection of a mobile app development framework or toolchain will vary depending on each company's app development strategy.

For the report Gartner evaluated 160 MADP Providers and key vendors in adjacent markets in the MADP, RMAD, and MBaaS space. On being featured as the only Indian vendor in the RMAD space, Mr. Joseph John, Managing Director at i-exceed commented, “When we conceptualized Appzillon, we wanted a tool that would enable enterprises to achieve their digital objectives in the shortest possible time with as minimal effort as possible. In the past year, based on our learnings we have released a newer version of Appzillon, taking into consideration the latest of what technology has to offer coupled with a deeper understanding of what customers need. The result has been astonishing so far and we believe that the mention in Gartner's report is proof of this."

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Thursday said the 2016-17 railway budget had failed to meet the state's expectations but welcomed some of its aspects. "On the whole, the railway budget has failed to meet the expectations of the people of Tamil Nadu," Jayalalithaa said.

She, however, welcomed Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu's announcements on setting up a rail auto hub in Chennai, a Delhi-Chennai dedicated freight corridor and upgrading two rail stations in Nagapattinam and Velankanni. The chief minister said the east coast corridor (Kharagpur-Vijayawada) ought to have been extended to Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu.

Referring to Prabhu's announcement on improving amenities for rail passengers, Jayalalithaa said they appeared to be contingent on public-private partnership taking off. "Further, many of the grievance redressal mechanisms appear to be moving exclusively to the digital platforms," she said.

According to her, the quality of service and grievance redressal to the common people who may not be digitally literate nor own a smartphone should also be ensured and not confined to only those who are active on the social media.

Urban office goers face increasing incidence of spine problems

Urban office goers face increasing incidence of spine problems, say doctors at Indian Spinal Injuries Center

* Prolonged sitting and standing not accompanied by adequate exercise and stretching exerts extra pressure on the spine, back, neck and legs that increases the incidence of back problems

* Doctors say the incidence of backache and neckache have risen dramatically in Delhi over the past decade

New Delhi, Feb 2016: Backaches and spinal problems have never been uncommon, but when every fifth patient visiting a specialist to consult remedies for spinal issues is a young office goer in 30s, you know there is a dangerous trend.

Doctors at Indian Spinal Injuries Centre say they are alarmed by the rise in numbers of young office professionals in Delhi NCR who are reporting spine problems that were earlier more prevalent in relatively older people.

Spinal problems, especially back pain, stiffness in neck and shoulders, immobilization or locking of joints, sore feet, swelling feet and legs often accompanied with pain are some of the common complaints from people who have long hours of sedentary jobs coupled with long commutes to work spending up to 3 hours standing or sitting daily in private vehicles or public transportation like metro, bus or trains. Apart from the physical stress that hurts the spine, the mental stress and anxiety as a part of today’s lifestyle further leads to increased incidence of backaches, neckaches and shoulder pains.

Sitting in the same position for extended periods of time and repetitive movements like using a keyboard and a mouse can cause repetitive stress injuries on the joints, muscles and nerves. Sitting in the same position for more than 4 hours a day is harmful to the spine.

“Prolonged sitting in same posture can add a tremendous amount of pressure to the back muscles and spinal discs, a slouched position can overstretch the spinal ligaments and strain the spinal discs and cause major pain in back and neck. The health hazards of long-term sitting are recognized worldwide. So much so, that many organizations in the west have introduced the culture of standing or flexible workstations to enable employees take a break from sitting. Similar to sitting, prolonged standing also has health implications. Standing keeps the body in an upright position, which requires considerable muscular effort. Prolonged standing results in pooling of blood in the legs with reduction in blood in active circulation. Insufficient blood flow further accelerates the onset of fatigue and causes pain in the muscles of the legs, back and neck, the muscles that maintain the upright position of the body, thereby affecting the spine. Both long-term sitting and long-term standing are equally bad.” says Dr. Vedant Vaksha, Assistant Consultant ISIC.

“Back aches and spinal issues have always been common, but what is alarming in recent times is the number of younger men and women they are afflicting. Prolonged work hours which do not allow time for appropriate walking or stretching breaks, lack of physical exercise in daily routine, sedentary jobs, long hours of commute to work are factors that are responsible for this surge.

Another factor is rise in the incidence of obesity due to poor dietary habits and lack of physical activity again putting further burden on the spine and lower extremities causing and aggravating the problem. Also, due to lack of exercise the muscles and ligaments in our back and joints become weak and can suffer injuries even with small actions like lifting weight,” says Dr. Vedant Vaksha, Assistant Consultant ISIC.

Besides prolonged sitting and standing andlack of physical activity, regular urban office goers also face spinal issues due to not so people friendly mode of commutation. With people either commuting with self-driven vehicle or public transport, damage is caused to the neck and the back during the travel. “Unscientific speed breakers also cause injuries. A slight miss in acknowledging the bulge and a person may end up with a whiplash injury causing painful and numb neck or limbs.” says Dr. Vedant Vaksha, Assistant Consultant ISIC.

Besides these, osteoporosis, malignancy, inflammatory diseases (arthritis), other metabolic bone diseases, and hematological diseases are some other issues that lead to spinal problems.

Vimal Sumbly, MD, Triumph Motorcycles India on the upcoming budget 2016

‘The government has already augmented the ‘Make in India’ campaign which has been phenomenal in putting India on the world map generating encouraging opinions across industries.

The wish-list of the industry includes implementation of fast rollout of GST so as to have an equitable tax system and unified market which, in turn will help in improving the efficiency and competitiveness. This will surely render India into one big market ensuring seamless movement of goods and services and push up GDP.

The Government should also look into reducing the import duties for  motorcycles that are 800 cc and above since none of the Indian manufacturers are working on similar capacity engines for now. This will definitely be a favourable move as it will help tide over the recent slump in the market and encourage buyers to get an excellent price point for their vehicles over that capacity. Cutting down on the extremely high duties will make the business environment more conducive and allow us to be more relevant to a larger section of the society. A major thrust on infrastructure and spending and road development will be good for the automotive industry as a whole. The Indian business community and overseas investors continue to be upbeat about India, and the government will hopefully do all that it takes to introduce measures to boost business sentiment.’

In Pic: Dr Uday Krishna Myneni, Consultant Orthopaedics, Joint Replacement, Trauma & Limb Reconstructive surgeon, KIMS Hospital; briefing media about a complex medical procedure performed for the first time in the country, which enabled the patient suffering from Cerebral Palsy with Quadriparesis to stand on his own feet, for the first time since his birth, on Friday at KIMS Hospital. The patient, Mr Srisailam aged around 40 years was also present on the occasion.

Hyderabad, 26th February 2016: One of a very rare surgery and achievement has been undertaken at the KIMS hospital, Hyderabad. In very rare fete, a group of doctors led by Dr. Udhay Krishna, performed a marathon surgery for over 5 hours to help a patient suffering from Cerebral Palsy with Quadriparesis with a hip fracture.

In this marathon surgery Dr. Uday Krishna and his team have treated this patient with a total replacement that has helped him stand on his own. This is the fist time this patient has been able to stand on own since birth. The patient, Mr Srisailam aged around 40 years has been suffering from rare disorder CEREBRAL PALSY since birth.

Cerebral palsy refers to a group of neurological disorders that appear in infancy or early childhood and permanently affect body movement and muscle coordination Cerebral palsy (CP) is caused by damage to or abnormalities inside the developing brain that disrupt the brain’s ability to control movement and maintain posture and balance

Unfortunately my patient had all four limbs affected (quadriparesis) which itself is very disabling he has stiff or tight muscles and exaggerated reflexes of all four limbs (spasticity)

His Condition was so bad that he could not even pray to GOD holding the hands together. And due to the quadriparesis (weakness of all four limbs) he could not stand or sit and was confined to the bed.

He Visited Dr. Udhay Krishna three years back when he suffered from a complex with complex hip problem coupled with pain due to fracture three years back. He had over the last few years undergone multiple surgeries elsewhere to try and attempted to fix the fracture but failed due to the complexity of the fracture and spasticity of the hip. Earlier all attempts to do a total hip replacement had failed as it tends to dislocate automatically.

The complication was in fixing the painful hip and thereby making the hip stand as well. Dr. Udhay and his team had started the surgery of by meticulous planning since the cup (acetabulam) is completely deformed and the position of the cup should be accurate. Given this background, it took the team about 5 hours to complete this surgery successfully.

Once the surgery was successfully done the patient was able to stand after 10 days with the help of a walker and may improve over the time. In future, the patient may require treatment in terms of getting injections or smaller surgeries to overcome the spasticity.
