Paras Bliss Hospital, Panchkula, Organizes Conference to Discuss the Importance and Scope of Fetal Medicine especially in first trimester of pregnancy

* As the first hospital in Tricity to have a dedicated Fetal Medicine Department, Paras Bliss facilitated the coming together of fetal medicine specialists

* Fetal Medicine is a relatively new super-speciality that focuses on identifying abnormal fetal conditions and treating problems in fetal development

Panchkula, 31 May 2016: First time in Tricity Fetal Medicine Foundation, India is organizing CME on Fetal Medicine at Paras Bliss Hospital, Panchkula. Doctors and experts from hospitals gathered together today to learn about and discuss the medical super-specialty of fetal medicine. The aim is to improve assessment of fetal growth and well-being, the health of unborn baby and thereby.

Paras Bliss Hospital, Panchkula, is the first hospital in Tricity to have a dedicated Fetal Medicine department, with experts in the highly specialized field of fetal diagnostics and treatment. Hence, the hospital is well-equipped to host other doctors working in the same area. Over 50 doctors attended the conference and found the sessions useful, especially because of the case studies presented by experienced doctors.

Fetal medicine is a relatively new super-specialized branch in medicine that deals with the assessment of fetal growth and development; timely diagnosis of congenital abnormalities, if any; and treatment of these. In short, fetal medicine addresses the health concerns of an ‘unborn’ to make sure baby comes out into the world in best health.

“Fetal medicine comes as a result of radical improvements in fetal diagnostic techniques. It helps us to follow and examine the development of babies inside their mothers’ wombs and identify anomalies much before birth. However, there is little knowledge and availability of tools in India. Hence, this conference aims at discussing the benefits and scope of the new branch for the welfare of both mother and child. The conference re-emphasizes and reiterates the Fetal Medicine Foundation standards and protocols in ultrasound and prenatal diagnosis of chromosomal abnormalities. Additionally, it also highlights the importance of comprehensive and early screening of birth defects, so as to invert the pyramid of care (shifting the focus to the first trimester from the third trimester), with the apex at 12 weeks,” said Dr Nupur Shah, Consultant, Fetal Medicine, Paras Bliss Hospital, Panchkula.

Discussing the role of biochemical screening of the mother during pregnancy, Dr Anita Kaul, HOD, Fetal Medicine, Apollo Centre for Fetal Medicine, New Delhi, highlighted the importance of screening for eclampsia, which often becomes an important cause of maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity. Meanwhile, Dr Rachna Gupta, Senior Consultant, Fetal Medicine, Maharaja Agrasen Hospital, New Delhi, spoke on combined screening (for Down’s, Edward’s and Patau’s Syndromes), multiple pregnancies in the first trimester, and increased nuchal translucency (collection of fluid under the skin at the back of the baby's neck).

Educating the audience on the importance and benefit of screening for anomalies in the first trimester, Dr Nupur Shah, Consultant, Fetal Medicine, Paras Bliss Hospital, Panchkula, said,“Expecting mothers are actually worried about the health of the baby in the womb. Ultrasound is an effective tool to know if the baby is healthy. It is the best non-invasive method through most the abnormalities in the fetus can be detected. Women should go with their doctor’s advice and opt for the ultrasound after 11-13 weeks to be sure.” To add on if required Needle Tests like CVS/Amniocentesis, Fetal MR, Blood Tests and genetic tests are also used to detect any birth defects.
