Chennai: HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company, India’s leading non-life insurer, today announced that the team from Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan School (K K Nagar), Chennai are the winners of the second edition of HDFC ERGO Insurance Awareness Award Junior – Quiz with New Horizon Public School, Airoli team from Mumbai claiming the title of first runner up.
The HDFC ERGO Insurance Awareness Award Junior – Quiz was pioneered in September 2016 and introduced to schools in Mumbai as a learning initiative to educate school students about insurance. With the success and overwhelming response the Quiz garnered, it was extended this year to five cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru making it a national competition. As part of the Quiz, HDFC ERGO Insurance experts conducted townhalls in more than 160 schools and imparted basic insurance knowledge to over 33,000 students of 8thand 9th standards.
This initiative of HDFC ERGO is relevant considering that penetration of General Insurance in our country stands at mere 0.77 percent of the GDP, as on FY17. The low penetration combined with the low awareness of Insurance and Insurance products are the core of financial hardships faced by individuals following any accidental loss or damage. Hence, the Quiz competition was conceptualized to make Insurance a fun and easy for the students to learn and understand and thereby preparing them for the uncertainties and risks of the future.
Talking about the second edition of the HDFC ERGO Insurance Awareness Award Junior - Quiz, Mr. Deepak Parekh, Chairman, HDFC Ltd. & HDFC ERGO General Insurance said, “India will be the world's youngest country by the year 2020, with an average age of the population resting at 29 years. But, despite the rise in risks and uncertainties the penetration of General Insurance in our country is at a mere 0.77%, and hence it is important to educate the youth on the subject of Insurance. The HDFC ERGO Insurance Awareness Award Junior – Quiz, is a great platform to impart this knowledge to our future generations and we are glad to see the support from the schools on this initiative steered by HDFC ERGO.”
Speaking at the Grand Finale of the HDFC ERGO Insurance Awareness Award Junior - Quiz, Mr. Ritesh Kumar, Managing Director & CEO, HDFC ERGO General Insurance said, “Living up to our commitment made last year, apart from Mumbai, this year we have added 4 more cities of Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru to the HDFC ERGO Insurance Awareness Award Junior – Quiz. We have received a wonderful response from the schools in all the 5 cities with over 125 schools participating in the Quiz.”
He further said that, “We are glad to have extended our Insurance Awareness drive, through the Quiz, to impart the understanding on the concept of risks and insurance in an exciting and engaging manner. It will help our young generation prepare themselves against the unforeseen risks of the future.”
The Quiz competition received participation from over 125 schools across the five cities. Among the 125 plus school participating, 25 schools (5 schools per city) were shortlisted for the semi-final rounds. The winning team from each city – Mount Litera Zee school from Bengaluru, New Horizon School from Mumbai, Purushottam Bhagchandka Academic School from Kolkata, Maxfort School from Delhi and Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan School from Chennai paved their way to the finals.
