Chennai, 22nd Sept 2017: Apollo Cancer Institute, Teynampet observed Rose Day to spread the message that cancer is conquerable. Actor Niki Galrani visited and interacted with the patients and gifted roses that marks the spirit of life, love and happiness. Rose Day is a celebration of life for cancer patients, perpetrated in the name of Melinda Rose, a Canadian born 14-year-old, who, though herself afflicted with cancer, spent her time spreading cheer and happiness all around her.

The courage, endurance and the spirit of children who have fought valiantly against cancer is celebrated each year on Rose Day, on the 22nd of September all over the world. Cancer survivors at Apollo Cancer Institute shared experiences of their fight against cancer and elaborated on how positive attitude, will power and strong support from family , friends & society played a crucial role in their recovery.

Doctors present during the event, emphasized on the need for proactive and preventive screening, citing that cancer detected early is curable. Apollo Cancer Institute has a dedicated Pediatric Haematology and Oncology unit which was inaugurated in 2002. Over the last 15 years, children with cancer and blood disorders have been treated using state of the art technology. Each year over 100 new children with cancer are being managed by a multidisciplinary team including paediatric oncologists, surgeons and radiation oncologists.

Bone marrow transplantation is the only curative option for patients with blood disorders like thalassaemia major, high risk leukaemia and primary immune deficiency disorders. They undergo high doses of chemotherapy or radiotherapy before receiving their donor's stem cells. Intensive supportive care needs to be provided for 2 weeks before the new cells start producing healthy blood.

This year on Rose Day the hospital has crossed a landmark milestone by performing over 1000 bone marrow transplants. Apollo Cancer Institute has joined hands to show appreciation to the patient families and donors who have struggled together to achieve miracle cures.
