Measures are underway to obtain permanent autonomous status and develop the institute in to a university, Loyola College secretary Dr S Lazar said, "Securing permanent autonomous status and also transforming the institute into a university are the two chief objectives accomplish before the centennial year in 2025. Relevant authorities shall be approached."
Even the management claims that obtaining university status could take two or more years, it has acknowledged a few constraints such as continuance of financial aid to the institute after it becomes a university.
Developing the existing infrastructure was cited as another factor that needs focus.
To celebrate loyola college's second rank in the recent National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and with the institute's decade of centennial year of foundation drawing in, the Loyola Alumni Association (LAA) has planned to host a two-day Loyola World Alumni Congress at their campus on October 1 and 2.
The congress would witness the commemoration of star alumni, felicitations of former professors, rectors, secretaries and principals.An endowment lecture in the memory of Shri Shyam Kothari would also be delivered by Dr R Seetharaman , CEO, Doha Bank, Qatar.
"We are expecting 2,000 alumni to participate in the event," Dr G Viswanathan Chancellor, VIT university and president of LAA told the reporters.
P Chidambaram, former Union finance minister and other Star alumni including actors Vishal and Jayam Ravi, and director Vetrimaaran are expected by the organisers to attend the event.
