India’s leading diabetic care centre, Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialties Centre organizes World Health Day Walk

Chennai, April 7, 2017: Dr. Mohan's Diabetes Specialties Centre today organized a walk observing World Health Day. Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialties Centre joins the World Health Organization (WHO) in observing World Heath Day 2017. This year the WHO is calling the global community to come together and “Talk Depression”. The walk commenced at 6 am followed by a welcome address by Dr.V Mohan, Chairman and Managing Director, Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialties Centre and a talk on depression by Dr. Poongathai, Senior Scientist & Head-Clinical Trials Operations, Madras Diabetes Research Foundation.

 The event had an average participation of 200 people, coming together to spread awareness. Starting from Dr. Mohan's Gopalapuram center, the walk ended at Conran Smith Road after which a seminar was held to promote actions to address Depression and raise awareness on the issue.

 Patients with diabetes are at higher risk for depression, Diabetes can cause complications and health problems that may worsen symptoms of depression.Dr. Mohan's Diabetes Specialties Centre encourages citizens to stay informed and maintain a positive lifestyle to prevent Depression and other types of depressive disorders.

Depression leads to poor lifestyle decisions, such as unhealthy eating, less exercise, smoking and weight gain — all of which are risk factors for diabetes. Dr. Mohan's Diabetes Specialties Centre takes this opportunity to bring focus on Depression this year on World Health Day. Various regions coordinated activities throughout the weekend including a Diabetes Walk and a Seminar on Depression in Chennai. There is a strong association between various chronic medical condition and increased risk for depression

Commenting on the occasion, Dr. V. Mohan, Chairman, Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialties Centre said, “An alarming ratio of India’s population is already affected by Depression and this is likely to double itself in the coming years. It is important to spread awareness that unless lifestyle changes and food habits are changed, depression will continue to impact the quality of life and productivity of an individual.  Diabetes also forms an important factor for depression. It is time we spread awareness and work upon eliminating the root causes of depression.

Supporting the statement, Dr. R. M. Anjana, Managing Director, Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialties Centre said, “According to a recent survey, people who are diagnosed with a chronic physical health problem such as diabetes are 3 times more likely to be diagnosed with depression than people without it.Depression can have a serious impact on a person's well-being and their ability and motivation to self-manage their condition.Depression is the most common psychiatric disorder witnessed in the diabetes community.Awareness and prevention about the chronic condition is a must”
