CHENNAI: Eighty bridges would be built in Tamil Nadu at a cost of Rs 159.74 crore, chief minister Jayalalithaa announced in the assembly on Friday.
One bridge each will be built in the Nilgris, Tiruvallur, Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts. Tiruvarur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Trichy and Cuddalore districts will get two bridges each.
Namakkal, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tiruppur and Coimbatore districts will get three bridges each.
Four new bridges each will be built in Namakkal, Erode, Dindigul and Sivaganga districts. Thanjavur and Salem will get five bridges each, and Pudukottai and Tuticorin will get eight bridges each.
Highways and minor ports department would obtain loan from Nabard to take up the construction work of the bridges, she said.
The chief minister said construction of these bridges would help 22 lakh people living in 472 villages across the state. As the bridges are coming up in rural areas, people there could easily transport their produces to the nearby towns.
