Qualcomm and Bhumi collaborate in rehabilitation project for Tamil Nadu flood relief
Chennai – August 05, 2016: Qualcomm Incorporated, through its subsidiary Qualcomm India, in collaboration with Bhumi, a non–profit organization, today inaugurated a housing project as a part of a relief and rehabilitation programme to support Chennai flood relief efforts, initiated in January of this year. The contribution of INR 63 lacs made by Qualcomm to Give2Asia to support Bhumi has been channeled towards construction of houses in underprivileged communities in villages in Tamil Nadu, and to rebuild educational infrastructure in select government schools.
The low cost housing programme has been launched to replace damaged huts and improve flood resilience of 20 families in villages in the outskirts of Chennai. During this period, the team reached out to over 100 shelter homes in neighboring districts like Azhaghunatham Village, Thiruporur by replacing their damaged articles, repairing roofs, building walls, toilets etc.
With the key focus areas being education of children and housing, Qualcomm additionally is supporting Bhumi to work with the education department of the Tamil Nadu State Government. With combined efforts they have provided support to 13,797 children from 12 of the worst affected schools in the city to prepare for their class 12 board exams.
Several thousand children will benefit from the rehabilitation programme in the coming years – helping them to recover from the shock and aftermath, improve their resilience against future floods and provide them with better environment and conditions to pursue their education.
